“Ready?” Is asked. She was almost bouncing with excitement. I was the opposite. I was dreading the amount of work that we would have to do today. But I wasn’t about to complain. I had unknowingly robbed these people of much of their life, I was going to do my best to make it up to them.

“Yup,” I said giving her a smile that was nowhere close to matching hers.

I looked back to the large white tent we had set up behind us. Is had found it when we had gone to get the catering van this morning. It also had plastic panels that worked as walls that we could put up on the sides.

It was perfect. This way we could keep the food out of the sunlight, keep it in one spot and make sure nothing was stolen without being weighed and then charged for.

One of the panels had a door like opening in it so we had that facing us so that only one person could be leaving it or entering at once.

Josh and Liam were stationed at either side of the opening. In ten minutes it would be noon, and people were already lining up, eager to get food. Josh and Liam would be sending away family members and making sure that the line kept its general order. They were like security guards of some sort. They would also tell everyone the rules.

The rules were that only one person from family could take food and someone in their family would have to supply the amount of labour required for whatever amount of food they take. It didn’t have to be the same person doing all the labour. If a family refused the labour, they would be forced to pay for the food they took. Simple rules.

Diego was going to be standing at the opening and take down the person’s name and the weight of food when they came out again. He would also be checking to make sure each person knew the rules, and if they didn’t, he would tell them before letting them in. He was the one doing that job because he was my guard. So he was still able to keep an eye on me from the doorway.

Izzy and I were going to be inside in the corner of the tent watching all the food and weighing it before each person left. Then we would write on the paper bags we had taken from the store yesterday the weight of the food they were holding.

Adam and Nora had gone back to the storage area at the store to reload the van. Adam had wanted to stay here and play security guard, but none of us trusted him to not screw up something. Nora would be alternating reloading the van and security guard.

It was a very well organized operation. I was impressed with what Is had come up with all on her own. I was also amazed by the fact that she chose to sit in the tent with me and weigh things all day. I know it would be hard for her not to do everyone else’s jobs.

The only thing I could hope ran smoothly was that people were honesty about everything. We couldn’t do more than ask for people’s honesty because half of them didn’t know how to read or write. I hope they don’t take advantage of us, we are trying to do more than just give them food. We are trying to give them a better way of life.

Right now Is and I were wandering around outside of the tent. We weren’t going to let people start getting food right away because Is had some weird thing about needing to stick to the time we had told people. But she had wanted to see how many people were here so we had come out of the tent to see.

And there were lots of people here. I couldn’t even guess how many. But already Josh and Liam had their work cut out for them.

They were going through and asking family members to leave. There was no fighting, only some talking between people which was good. I don’t know what we would have done if there was fighting. All of us, with the exception of Diego, were all teenagers. We had next to no experience at any of this.
