I was very proud of the amount of people that came out for construction that evening. At least half the people who had come to the food giveaway yesterday were now here again.
Ron, the contractor Mikey had found, was very nice. He wasn’t going to charge anything for helping us do the build. He said that since it was for the good of the country, he wouldn’t charge anything. I was fine with that.
Ron gave out orders and the people of Sorsa obeyed him immediately. Most of the volunteers were male. Since they all were used to hard labour, none of them complained, and a lot already knew how to use all the equipment we brought. Work was progressing quickly already.
The old buildings that had been in place on the west side of Sorsa were easy to demolish. They were crumbling so bad there was no stability to any of the walls. The wood taken from the old buildings was unusable, but the bricks and rocks were defiantly.
The first building that was being built was going to be a large home to house about five or six families, probably more. The idea was, we would build enough of these so that each family had somewhere to stay, and then we would start building smaller ones for a family or two. Then the buildings that had been used at first, would be turned into other things, like schools, or work places or something like that. I hadn’t thought of them all yet, but I’m sure we would have plenty ideas when they were needed.
The thing I was upset about was I only had a month left in Arsom. My birthday was in two weeks, and then after that I only had two and a half weeks left. We would be lucky if we had the first building completed by then.
My goal is to create a system that works for these people, so that when I go back to France, things will still run smoothly here.
“Wow this is amazing Izzy,” Mikey said coming up to me. I was standing off to the side watching as building progressed. I was terrible with building things. I wanted to help, but I would do more wrong than right.
“What is?” I asked turning to face him.
“This whole set up you have. All the work you’re doing, your commitment.” He took a breath before whispering, “You.”
I smiled. “Aw thanks, Mikey. You’re pretty amazing too.” I kissed his cheek quickly.
“No I’m not. I haven’t done anything right,” he said.
“Yeah you have. Your allowing me to point out your wrongs and you’re fixing them. That is plenty for a teenager to be doing.”
“But you’re the brains behind the whole thing.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’re been king since you were four, that’s pretty amazing.”
“Yeah but I failed miserably,” Mikey said drawing our argument in almost a full circle.
I looked back over at where the people were working. “I just hope this is strong enough to carry on when I leave.”
“I’ll make sure it does,” Mikey promised.
“It’s for your people, you should,” I teased. “I only have a month left,” I said sadly.
“I know,” Mikey said shaking his head. “I keep thinking we have more time but we don’t. It’s weird to think that you’ll be leaving.”
“Is that your way of saying you want me to stay?”
“Yeah it is. I really want you to stay,” Mikey admitted.
“You’re so cute,” I said. I didn’t want to tell him that I wanted to stay too. My life was in France. I couldn’t just stay here.
“I feel bad,” I said after a couple moments of silence.
