Chapter 9- Sometimes You have to Stand up For Yourself*Recap of Last Chapter*
I walked up to Mrs. Peterson and she made a gesture for me to twirl, I laughed but spun in a circle anyway.
"You look lovely dear, Thank you for wearing Red, I know it was short notice, but the color scheme was chose last night. And I have another last minute request..." She trailed off. Fear clawed at my throat... Oh no."*Now Chapter 9 Begins*
"What do you need?" I asked cautiously.
"You know the song 'Sweeter than Fiction' right?" She asked hopefully. I did know that song, it was one of my favorite Taylor Swift songs, but it wasn't really the kind of song I sang.
"Yes, Ma'am" I said, and she sagged in relief.
"I have an acoustic guitarist, I need you to go practice, with him, and I need you to sing the song." She said excitedly. My mouth fell in.. She...
"You... you.. want me to sing it... tonight?" I asked. And she nodded her head in excitement.
"Mrs.Peterson, I cant sing that tonight I haven't had any practice" I said, completely at loss. She just expected me to sing it? She looked as lost as I felt.
"I need a romantic song.. can you pull on out of your hat?" She asked. I thought for a moment.
"I can do Listen to your Heart" I said, and she looked confused.
"If it is romantic, I trust you. Now Go!" She shooed me. I rushed to the stage and stood on the side, as my name was being introduced. Why did the song need to be romantic? Was it her anniversary? My name was called by the stage man, and I walked out smiling. Putting my confusion to the side.
"Ladies and Gentlemen Annabella Julliard" He yelled, and I smiled, placing a kiss on his cheek. I looked to the paper telling me what to say, on the podium. But I was brought up short when my eyes scanned to words. Swallowing the unsuspected, bitterness and heart ache, and began speaking loudly. <That's why it was supposed to be romantic.> I thought bitterly.
I smiled brightly again, and started the speech that Mrs.Peterson had written for me.
"Everyone, I would like to thank you for the warm welcome. But for more exciting News, I would like to share some new information with all of you." I started, my heart in my throat. And I wasn't sure why I felt so upset. I had known about this.
"I would like to congratulate Mr. Tyler Peterson, and his now Fiance Scarlett Prince. For the happy couple I will be preforming 'Listen to Your Heart'. May you have many happy years, in front of you." I put on my fake-st smile, as cheers of congratulations sounded. I smiled again, and sat at the piano. Before starting the song, my hands gliding over the piano keys.
As I sang the romance song for Tyler and Scarlett, I realized that this unexplainable connection with Tyler, was at fault for the tears that brimmed in my eyes.
"Listen to You Heart,
I know there is something,
in the wake of your smile"
Why was I hurt? I knew he was going to be engaged, but having to be the one to share his news, and to be 'happy' for them. Just made it set badly with me.
As the song came to an end, The Crowd hooted, and hollered. And I smiled at the cheers. Turning my mind away from the engagement. And enjoying the appraisal. I remember my first show, and how no body had cheered, and it freaked me out. Until everyone started cheering.
I grinned as I made my way down the stairs, as the band started playing some classical music. Bud and Payson were at the bottom of the stairs when I got there. To my shock, I saw Ethan holding Paysons hand.
"Bud, Payson, Its wonderful to see you." I grinned widely, pulling Bud into a hug. I wiggled my eyes at Payson who blushed.
"AnnaBella, this is Ethan, my date" She said smirking at me. The whole act of Annabella seemed relatively funny.
"Its wonderful to meet you Ethan." I smiled, and he just stared at me with wide eyes.
"Wow, Bud wasn't kidding. You are hot!" He grinned. I chuckled as Payson swiftly smacked him in the back of his head."Sorry" Ethan muttered, smiling down at Payson.
"Bud, you sweet-talker" I said, kissing his cheek. Just then Tyler walked up. Scarlett tucked under his arm. Bud gave me a calculating look, as I fought to hide the bubble of pain.
"Mr.Peterson" I smirked at him. He looked at me, in the look of Awe I was used too. However, I turned my smile to Scarlett.
"You must be his soon-to-be" I said holding my hand out to Scarlett, She smiled. A sincere smile, that shocked me. Her hand grabbing mine.
"My name is Scarlett, and yes Tyler is <mine.>" He words held a bite, that contradicted her sweet smile. There is Scarlett the Harlot. I looked to Tyler, but his eyes were on Bud.
"Geez Bud, Ella wasn't enough for you? Got to hit on Annabella?" He asked, his voice sounding angry. I had to fight the coldness that threatened to enter my gaze.
"Oh no, Bud is more of a Brother." I said laughing. Tyler's eyes turned to me, and softened.
"Yea, I have a feeling he will have his hands full with Ella." Tyler laughed, Bud stiffened. and Scarlett glared.
"I HATE her" She sneered. I smirked, and it didn't go unnoticed by her.
"Who is Ella?" I asked coolly. Tyler smiled, almost Fondly?
"She's my firecracker" He sighed, and I almost fainted.... His? He seemed to notice, and corrected himself. "She's a Firecracker. You know, Feisty Nerd. Kicked my jewels" He looked away oddly, shivering in a comically haunted look.
"Ahh, Yes, I believe I know the type. If you will excuse me, I'm going to talk to some people." I said hastily, before placing another kiss on Bud's and Ethan's cheeks, and nodding at Tyler, before making my way to the balcony.
The fresh air hit me like a whip. I took a deep settling breath. What the hell is wrong with me? I walked up and leaned on the balcony. Staring up at the night sky. A warm hand on my back, brought me out of my mind.
Where I was trying to analyses my reaction to Tyler, I turned and looked at Bud, who pulled me into a hug. The sweet, comfort of it, told me. He knew it had bothered me.
"It really got to you? You didn't know you were the opening for the engagement. " He whispered. It wasn't a question, but a statement.
"No, and I dont know why it bothers me. It shouldn't, he is a pain in the ass." I spat. And that's what bothered me, why did I like him.
"Some people just have immediate connections, You and Tyler, are a lot alike. Not competently, but enough your attracted to each other. Don't let it get you down though." He placed a gentle kiss on my forehead. "Remember, your gay brother will always have a shoulder for you to cry on." He said lighting the mood, before he walked back into the Cafe.
Maybe it was just that easy, I had been attracted to Tyler's arrogant ways. But I will have to work on that. I refuse to fall for a guy, who is 1. Engaged, and 2. So much unfit for me. I almost laughed, of cource I would like him.
He was a football player, a hot Block of Jock, who had a charming smile, and quick witty come-backs. What girl wouldn't like that? I was startled yet again by a deep voice.
"You look like your trying to solve how to kill the president." Tyler joked. I turned smirking, and saw him standing in the doorway of the balcony. Silently he came to stand next to me.
"Scarlett seems like a colorful person." I said lightly. He groaned.
"I dont even like her, she is a few colorful words, that dont need to be said in the presence of a lady. " He said, neither of us looking at one-another.
"Why are you marrying her, if you dont love her?" I asked, voicing my thoughts.
"Because my parents, choose her for me." He said bitterly. And it clicked into place. Betrothed, not in love, arranged marriage. I nodded my head.
"I'm sure your parents are the same, wanting you to be perfect?" He asked, and I shook my head no.
"My parents dont know I even exist" I said smiling, wistfully. "But parents sometimes, need to be told what you want." I said. And He looked at me, in the corner of his eye.
"What do you mean? Scarlett is a business move, I don't have a choice. It wouldn't do me good to tell them what I wanted. " He sighed.
"Mr.Peterson. With all due respect. When I said sometimes parents need to be told, what you want. I mean they need to be told, that its your life. That means your choices, your mistakes, not theirs. If you spend your life trying to please your parents, then you will never be happy. And a real parent wouldn't want you to live your life unhappily." I explained.
"If you wait, when your parents are no longer there. You will have been nothing but their puppet. Sometimes drastic times call for drastic measuers. But as my Father told me. 'All is fair in Love and War'. No matter what colorful words, Ms.Prince may be. No one deserves to be with someone. They dont love, or doesn't love them back."
"Many people die young. Why spend the short life you have, trying to be something, you dont wanna be?" I asked him, but the question was rhetorical. Silence filled the air. As my words sunk in.
And I had a revelation, I have spent so much time, hating life, because of what had happened. My dad, and Ruby Dieing. The drugs, and parties. I focused on the negative so much, that I never paid attention to the good.
With a second thought I realized, the note, Tyler had threw at me. Made my life hell. But I got two friends out of it, and Tyler. Not a friend, but close enough.
My life had changed, and the note was to thank, and to blame. But it wasn't all bad, maybe the new friends, the increased job, wasn't as bad as I thought it was.
"I have to go. But Thank-You, Annabella, I think I will talk to them tonight. Are you sure you wanna play piano? You could be a motivational Speaker." Tyler Joked, and I chuckled.
"I like piano just fine. But Go Tyler, don't let them live their lives through you." I said, and he threw me a smile, before heading out. I chuckled, who would have thought. Trying to advise Tyler, would give me a new outlook, on the insanity that had become my life.
*********Tyler's POV*********
After the Party <Center>
"Dad, I need to talk to you and Mom, before you head upstairs" I said, after dinner. Dad looked at me in confusion. We didn't talk much, so I think I shocked him. Mom walked in and looked at me expectantly.
"I dont wanna marry Scarlett" I blurted.
"Of course you do honey." Mom cooed, and anger bubbled up.
"No, You want me to. I want to marry someone I love" I ran my hand through my hair. Annoyed she would even suggest I wanted to marry that slut.
"Where is this coming from? Is it Annabella?" Mom asked, and my silence was answer enough.
"She is a good girl, but clearly a bad influence. Don't talk to her anymore. You will marry Scarlett." Mom demanded, I looked to my dad with hopeful eyes. But instead I was given a cold glare.
"If this girl is feeding your mind with lies, and trying to get you to leave Scarlett, then you need to stay away from her. This is a critical business move." My Father said coldly.
"I'm not marrying that Slut." I said venomously. My dads fist was quick to connect to my jaw. It hurt like bloody hell. I clutched my jaw and glared at my dad.
"You will do as your told Boy!" He yelled. My mother stepped in. Her fear of dad getting the best of her. She didn't want a repeat of last time.
"The wedding is not until after graduation. If you find a girl by then, we will talk about it." She said, sending a swift look to my Father. Daring him to argue, He practically growled, and left the room. I was about to thank my mom. When her hand came out and snapped across my face.
"Don't upset your father. I will not defend you again. You find yourself a girl, that I like, and we will discuss the <possibility> of you being with her, and not Scarlett." She glared at me.
"And I don't like any girls, so dont think it will do you any good." And with that, she left me, with an imprint of her hand on one side of my face, and a red mark from my dads fist on the other. My anger got the best of me, and with a cry of anger.
I punched the wall, the plaster breaking under my fist. And then.. a plan formed in my mind. And I smiled..
I knew just what I was going to do.....
