"Sharon!" His voice echoed through the hall, sharp and desperate.
I froze, my body trembling, unable to move a muscle. My vision blurred, my head heavy, and the world felt distant. All I could hear was Stephen's voice calling my name before darkness swallowed me.
"Sharon! Sharon! Don't do this to me, please..."
I felt him lift me. The motion was rushed, almost frantic. I could barely register the chaos around me, students shouting, footsteps pounding, the smell of the hallway mixing with panic as Stephen carried me downstairs.
Helen and Bella were at the bottom, their faces pale and devastated. "Sharon!" they cried in unison.
I was rushed into an ambulance and driven straight to the hospital, my body numb, my thoughts a tangled mess.
"I hope she'll be alright," Stephen muttered, pacing impatiently as nurses began attending to me.
"Huh? Did you just say that?" Bella snapped, anger flaring in her eyes as she grabbed his shirt. "You did this to her! You're wicked!"
Stephen caught her hands gently but firmly. "You need to calm down," he said, his voice steady despite the tension.
At that moment, Sharon's mom appeared, rushing toward us. Bella immediately ran to meet her.
"Bella! What happened to her? Tell me!" her voice was tight with panic.
"She tumbled on the stairs," Bella choked out, her own voice trembling.
"Oh my gosh! How is she? I need to see her now! I need to know how my baby is doing!" Her mother's voice cracked as she reached the door to the treatment room.
"Ma, you can't enter now," a nurse said firmly.
"But she's my daughter! I need to see her! She needs me! Please, I'm begging you!" Sharon's mom pleaded, tears welling in her eyes.
"Just be patient. You'll see her soon," the nurse reassured gently.
"I'll try," she whispered, sinking into a chair, hands clutching each other as she tried to steady her racing heart.
A few minutes later, the doctor emerged, his expression serious but calm.
"Doctor, how is she?" Sharon's mom asked, rising immediately, worry etched into every line of her face.
"Who are you to her?" the doctor asked sharply.
"She's my daughter," she said, her voice trembling.
The doctor nodded. "She has bruises on her head, but they're minor. She was very lucky. She'll need to be careful next time. I'll send a nurse with crutches shortly."
"Can we see her now?" Mrs. Kate asked, concern plain in her voice.
"Yes," the doctor replied. "She should be awake any minute now."
Sharon's mom exhaled sharply. "Okay," she whispered as they all entered the room.
We gathered around her bed, taking in her pale face and closed eyes. Helen clutched Bella's arm, their worry mirrored in their wide eyes.
"I'm sorry about what happened to her," Mrs. Kate said softly to Sharon's mom.
"No need to apologize. The doctor said she's alright, and it's not your fault. Look at my poor baby," her mother sobbed, brushing a strand of hair from my forehead.
"I'll be heading back to school now. Hope you don't mind. I was in a meeting," Mrs. Kate added gently.
"It's alright," Sharon's mom murmured. Her phone buzzed, and she answered quickly, voice tense and calm.
"Hello... Carly," she said.
"How is she?" Carly asked anxiously, her voice high with worry.
"The doctor said she's okay, but she hasn't woken up yet," Sharon's mom replied.
"I'm on my way. I want to see her," Carly said, urgency in every word.
"Don't worry. I'll wait for you here," her mother reassured.
"I'm coming now," Carly said before hanging up.
Sharon's mom sank back into her chair, eyes fixed on me, her fingers twisting nervously in her lap. Every second felt endless as we waited, the tension in the room thick enough to choke on.
