"Your friend came to see you, Sharon," Allison said casually, eyes glued to Riverdale playing on her laptop.
I froze.
Four years.
That was how long it had been since I'd last seen her... or even heard her voice.
I slowly turned.
"Sharon!" Jane squealed, jumping up and wrapping her arms around me in a tight hug, her happiness overflowing.
"Jane..." My voice came out breathless. "What are you— how did you even find me?"
"Bella told me where you were," she said, pulling back to look at me properly. "I really missed you."
"Me too," I replied softly. I guess.
"So..." she tilted her head, studying my face. "Are your parents back together?"
"Yeah. They didn't go through with the divorce."
Her eyes lit up. "That's great."
There was a brief pause before she leaned closer. "So... have you been in contact with Eric? Bella refused to tell me. I don't know why."
My heart skipped.
Should I lie?
I had always been jealous of her. Always.
"N–no," I said quickly. "Not at all."
"Oh." Her shoulders dropped slightly. "I lost his contact and I really want to speak with him."
"I'll... see what I can do about that," I said.
Another lie.
"Okay, thanks."
"You're welcome."
She smiled again, then suddenly smirked. "So... Bella told me you're with Stephen — hashtag Playboy. Is that really true?"
"Yeah," I laughed. She had always been dramatic.
"Seriously?!" she gasped. "I swear I didn't believe it at first. I kept saying it out loud — Sharon and Stephen... Sharon and Stephen... S²!"
"Are you making fun of me?" I laughed, though maybe I was laughing at myself too. Stupid, right?
"No, but tell me — are you guys in love? Do you really love him?"
Before I could answer, Allison shut her laptop and jumped in.
"I think I need to butt in right now," she said grinning. "They're so in love. And that Stephen guy? He's crazy in love. Like... crazy enough to kill anyone who touches his girl."
She burst out laughing.
"Stop making fun of him," I laughed too. She wasn't wrong though. Stephen was crazy.
"Really?" Jane's eyes sparkled. "Tell me — who are the guys that tried to snatch you from him?"
My chest tightened.
I can't tell her Eric was one of them.
No. Never.
"Forget it," I waved it off. "It'll bore you."
"It can't," she insisted. "I love hearing crazy stories."
"So my love life is crazy?" I teased.
"To–ta–lly," Allison chimed in.
I sighed softly, then said it anyway — the truth.
"I love him more than anything in the world."
"Aww..." Jane smiled warmly. "That's so sweet."
I swallowed, then turned the attention back to her. "What about you? Are you seeing someone?"
She shook her head. "Nah. Still hanging around."
"No?" I gasped dramatically. "Come on! Don't tell me no one's attracted to this damsel. Are you serious?!"
"It's not that," she said quietly. "I'm the one who closed my heart."
I already knew why.
Eric.
"Let me make you a cup of coffee," I said, standing up, needing an excuse to breathe.
"No, don't worry," she replied. "I won't stay long."
Just then, my phone vibrated.
I looked down.
Eric.
My heart stopped.
Why now?
Out of all moments... was this really a coincidence?
I stared at the screen, torn between the past and the present, while Jane sat right in front of me — completely unaware.
