Scott's POV
I look out over the packhouse's garden. It's a nice garden, it has all kinds of flowers, plants and trees. It's important for wolves to feel one with nature, that's why we also live a few miles out of town.
The last few years have been hard, but not impossible. At some times I could hardly keep my head above water. I work a part time job at a radio station right now to make some extra money. It pays well and I like doing it, although it can sometimes be stressful. I had the night shift yesterday, which means taking naps of an hour, just to announce the news. There are no shows at night. This time though, I was allowed to make my own list of songs.
I sometimes miss the peace of college. Just going to college, following the classes, studying. It has some kind of regularity to it that I like. My life now is stressful. I would have done a few things differently looking back at it, but in life, you don't always get second chances.
''Scott!'' Kirstie yells at me from the house. She has this thing where she always disturbs the peace of my stressed mind.
''Yeah?'' I want to ignore her and just have my rest, but I know I can't. It could be something important.
''She's awake and she won't go to sleep anymore.'' Kirstie says, sighing when she sees my tired look. ''I'm sorry to bother you, but she needs her dad right now.'' She walks back into the house. I had her to be our babysitter the time I was away, but I know how Cara is with sleeping. She hardly ever goes to sleep if her dad isn't with her.
''I'm on my way.'' I say, getting up. I know it has been hard for Kirstie too. She has been helping out as much as she can, but she is in college too and she has a mate. She is also the beta, so she's a busy bee. I appreciate her help though. ''Thanks for watching her while I was gone.'' The night shift at the radio station is from 12 to 6am. It's almost 7 now which means I was in the garden for at least half an hour.
''No problem, you know I'm always willing to help.'' She says, smiling tiredly herself.
''Go to sleep okay?'' I hug her quickly. ''Is Mitch still at his parents?'' I ask her. I still get nervous when he's away from me. It makes me think of that one day I almost lost him, the day I almost lost both of the most important people in my life.
Kevin told me I had to choose between my babies. I knew that if I choose Mitch, he might not be able to forgive me for not saving our child. I had to try though. I noticed that after the mating bite, I licked it and it healed very fast. Maybe my saliva can heal Mitch too. So I told Kevin to save the baby. He cut Mitch further open, while I licked his wounds. It was a long shot, but the best solution I could come up with in that moment. Kevin pulled out the baby and was able to save her. I couldn't focus on the baby though, I had to know if I saved Mitch. The wound was already healing in front of my eyes. Mitch's heartbeat got weaker, but didn't stop. I kept licking the wound, hoping that it would be enough to save Mitch.
Eventually the beep in the room got faster and Mitch opened his eyes. It worked. It truly worked. I remember the joy I felt in that moment. I saved my mate and my baby.
''Scott!'' I hear a familiar voice yelling my name behind me, bringing me back in the present.
''Mitchy!'' I run to him, putting my arms around him and picking him up from the ground. He's here. He really is, and he will never leave. ''I missed you.'' I whisper in his shoulder.
''Aww, Scotty. I missed you too. Now I want to see my baby!'' He says, before jumping out of my arms and going to see our child. Even though it has been a year since he had the baby, I still thank the moon goddess and all my lucky stars for that one moment where I made the right decision.
