I am rooted to the ground in my spot, while my back still faces her.
I close my eyes and try to calm myself before turning around to face her.
"Sure." I finally say to her.
Her facial expression seems almost surprised as if she assumed I wouldn't have agreed to it.
She quickly shakes her head and then begins to walk around the island and heads over towards the living room.
The walk is short and before I realize it, we're both staring at each other from our adjacent couches.
Another moment passes and I decide on saying:
"So..."
But clearly Mia decided the silence was too much as well because we both spoke at the same time.
We paused for another second but this time Mia spoke first.
"I'll go first." She says, while I nod my head acknowledging that it's okay for her to go first.
She sucks in a deep breath then begins with something I would've never expected my best friend would ever say in a million years.
"We've been secretly dating for two months now..." And that was all I heard to be honest.
It's like my body became numb and my brain along with it.
All I could think about was how much of an idiot I had been for not realizing it sooner. All the secretive calls, and never fully answering questions, and not including the times she's avoided telling me things.
I mean I never really payed much attention to it and I never really wanted to pry in her personal life because she would always tell me at her own pace. So I never felt the need to pressure her into telling me all of her deepest darkest secrets, but now that I realize the way she's been acting there is no way I should have missed it.
"... and so I wanted to come clean." She finishes which happens to catch my attention and makes me wonder what else she truly must have said after "We've secretly been dating for a few months."
"I don't know if you're quiet because you're disappointed in me or because you actually didn't hear a word I said."
Gosh, she knows me all too well.
"I.." Begin to speak but my voice sounds hoarse and so I try again after clearing my throat except this time my words came out clear with no hesitation behind them at all.
"I never would've expected this to happen but what's done is done. I also would never want to put you in a position where you have to make a tough decision such as this one, so I'll do it for you. Give me a month and I'll be out of the apartment and settled somewhere else." And with that I rose from the couch to be greeted by pure shock on Mia's face.
I began to walk away when Mia rose as well.
"What!" She rose her voice, while shaking her head in clear frustration. "Whoa, come on now, I think you're blowing this out of proportion Amelia." She rose her voice a little higher, but with hesitation not far behind.
And that was it for me. I don't know if it's the fact that she was with him, or even the fact that she's been hiding this, or maybe it's because I've been a bit stressed for the past few days. Either way that last comment was the last straw for me.
I turned around and stared at her with such distaste, I truly wondered if this was the end of our friendship.
"I'm blowing this out of proportion?" I stated as a rhetorical question along with a chuckle. "YOU'RE THE ONE WHO'S DATING THE GUY WHO TRIED TO HAVE ME RAPED! LET ALONE, HE TRIED TO JOIN!" I finish the last few words with tears clouding my eyes, and as they began to fall I forcibly wiped them away.
