Chapter 14 - Better
Every year around four hundred young people kill themselves, and that's about four hundred people too many if you ask me. For those people who knowingly cause these people to end their own lives, they deserve to take their place. No one should ever have to feel so upset that ending their life is their only option. There always another way if you ask me, but maybe its because I've never personally self harmed, who knows.
The next few weeks were Pavel and I skating on very thin ice. There was only incident where Damien deleted one of Pavel's assignments and he nearly did something stupid, but I stopped him just in time. There was another incident where they kicked Pavel in the groin (again) for an uncalled reason and I was there for him as well. I just held him as he groaned unhappily in pain. He claimed that women would never understand how painful it was but then I told him to try giving birth to a child, that shut him up.
As the term ended along with our exam block, Pavel and I had a three weeks to do whatever we pleased. "Where are you going?" I asked, watching him put a water bottle and towel into a bag. "I'm going to the gym, I haven't been in ages because I've been busy so I might as well go now while I have some free time." He said pulling the back pack on. "Pavel they're gonna be suspicious if you go to the gym with a long sleeved shirt and if you wear short sleeves then they'll see the bandages..." I pointed out. He frowned, "I'm staying here then..." I kissed his cheek and grabbed my own bag. "I'm going shopping, are you coming?" I asked. "We went yesterday..." He mumbled. "But then you'll be here alone," I pointed out. He shrugged, "Fine I'll come but can we stop by my room so I can get changed?" I nodded and held his hand walking out the door.
As we were walking to his room, I asked him when the last time he'd shaved was. He rubbed his cheek and thought. "I dunno," he shrugged. "A few days maybe?" He smirked. He stayed at my place a lot, because I could cook better (not much better) and because my room was closer to other important buildings. One day he just brought over a bag packed with clothes to save him the effort of walking back and forth across the campus. I didn't mind, I loved having him around. "I'm going to shave and stuff I'll be back in a minute" He said disappearing into the bathroom. I giggled, there was just something about him shaving that I found hilarious. He looked a lot younger than he was so it was so strange seeing him shave. He came out a few minutes later with a change of clothes and a clean face. "You look so much younger Pavel," I giggled. He rolled his eyes and his cheeks flushed a light red colour.
"I'm hungry," he complained, following behind me. I was inspecting a nice pair of shoes, "You're always hungry," I said rolling my eyes. He gave me his puppy dog eyes and I gave in, putting down the shoes. "Come on then," I laughed, taking his arm. Pavel and I held hands or linked arms a lot, it made us feel connected and close to each other. Pavel told me he loved me a lot more than usually, as much as I liked it, it made me worried that he going to do something. I hadn't had the guts to ask him about it yet though.
When we got to the food court (He basically dragged me there) we looked around for somewhere to sit, but the place was practically full. He groaned and looked around. "Hey is that Dr McCoy?" I asked, pointing to the far corner of the room. "Yeah I'm sure he'll be thrilled for us to join him." He said sarcastically. I stood next to the doctor with Pavel reluctantly following behind. "Hey!" I greeted. "Is it alright if we sit here, everywhere else is full?" He nodded and motioned towards the seats in front of him. We sat down and Pavel left to get food.
"So, how have you two been?" He asked, half smiling. "Well there's been a few close calls, but other than that pretty good. He's been clean since I last saw you." I smiled. "Listen, I can't say anything yet but you show both exceptional skills in nursing and dentistry. You were saying how Pavel could be getting assigned early? I work on the Enterprise, I might be able to request you." I looked at him in shock. "W-what, really!?" He nodded and half smiled, leaning back in his seat. "Thank you that would solve everything doctor!" He rolled his eyes, "I'm off duty, just called me Leonard or Leo or something..." I giggled, "thank you Leonard..." He smiled. "Um and this is a big ask, but can you keep from telling Pavel this because nothing's confirmed yet, and you don't wanna get his hopes up okay?" I was going to protest but Pavel came and sat back down, passing me something to eat. I thanked him and went back to my conversation with Bones. "So if you serve on the Enterprise, then why isn't it running at the moment?" I asked, taking a bite of this burger thing that Pavel had gotten me. "Well the ship needed repairs, and new recruits. There were a lot of people retiring this year for some reason so there's lots of positions available." I shot a hopeful smile towards Pavel, who returned it. Leonard was actually a really nice guy once you talked to him. Pavel and I were scared of him when we first met. "This isn't really a problem until later, but before you board a ship, there is a physical exam, where we just check to see the state of your health. If someone who isn't Vienna or I check you over, they could render you emotionally unprepared for service, and leave you back here on earth. So we'll have to be pretty careful..." He said trailing off. I nodded looking at Pavel. "We could cover some of it up with make-up?" I suggested. Leonard nodded, "Whatever works."
Leonard had a shift later that afternoon so he left early and left Pavel and I together there again. Pavel stared at his empty plate and frowned. "I'm sorry that you're going to all this trouble for me, it's not worth it..." He said blankly. "Pavel of course you're worth it, I'd go to any length to make sure you're all right," I said, cupping my hand over his. He smiled, and leaned in to give me a peck on the cheek. "Thank you.." he muttered. "Lets go look at more shoes!" I said enthusiastically standing up. He groaned and put his arm around my shoulders. "How about we have a look at the books then?" I smiled. He nodded and rolled his eyes.
Pavel and I were tired for no apparent reason, probably just from overcoming the stress of assessment and other things. The weather was fairly awful as well, so we just decided to have a nap. Pavel always had his arms around me or was holding my hand, and I really loved it. We had slept for a couple of hours before I eventually woke up, with the familiar weight of his arm. It took me a few seconds to register where it was. His arm was draped casually across my chest and I started blushing. I looked over to his adorable sleeping face and sighed. "Pavel?" I nudged him. he stirred but didn't move his hand. "Pavel?" I cooed. His eyes fluttered open and he smiled. "Hey," He said, trying to keep his eyes open. "Your hand?" I prompted. It took him a few seconds to realise where it was resting. "Oh!" He gasped, quickly pulling it away. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean- I wasn't trying to..." His face quickly turned a deep red. I rolled my eyes and kissed him. "It's fine," I admitted, "Don't worry about it." He hid his face in his hands. "Sorry..." He muttered again. I hugged him tightly, "It wouldn't of mattered even if you were awake..." I whispered as seductively as I could manage. He blushed even more and smiled, kind of raising an eyebrow. He wrapped his arms around my waist and kissed me. Normally his kisses were soft and slow, but this time it was more passionate and heated. I could hardly describe it. We let go for air and he blushed again. "How was it?" he asked. I shrugged. "Alright," I said smugly. "What do mean alright?"He asked, shaking his head and laughing. "Not so much tongue next time maybe," I smirked. He rolled his eyes and pulled me back into another kiss. "Better?" he asked when we finished. I nodded, "Better."
