Chapter 17 - Travel
Adrenaline is both a weird and amazing thing. It's that fight or flight instinct that pushes us beyond out limits, and makes us do what we thought was beyond our possibilities.
Pavel grabbed my hand and swiftly pulled me away from the window of our hotel room, straight towards a bus stop. He pulled me onto the first bus that drove past, not even looking at where the bus was going, just anywhere was better than the hotel. Pavel took a deep breath in a closed his eyes as the bus left the bus stop. "You alright?" I asked, nuging him slightly. He nodded and ran a hand through his hair. "We'll get as far away as possible and get a hotel there, we can figure the rest out later..." he muttered looking out the window.
The bus took us half and hour in one direction, and then we after a change of buses, another hour in a different direction. Pavel didnt say much, he just held my hand occasionally and looked out the window. He kept tapping his fingers on the seat beside him.
Pavel had been acting strange when we got to the hotel and it took me a while to figure out why. He kept scratching his arm and fiddling with things in his hands. I sat down next to him and kissed his cheek. "What's the matter?" I asked, searching his face for an expression but there was nothing. "You alright?" I asked again. He shook his head and stared off into the distance. "I really need to cut..." He muttered, still looking into the distance. "Pavel no..." I muttered, taking his hands. "You were almost killed and raped, and I promised to protect you..." He muttered. His hands were shaky, I kissed his cheek. "Yes but you also promised me you would stop." He sighed and clenched his fingers. "I can't let you do that, and I'm absolutely fine so you kept your promise." He shook his head and looked down, and then looked into my eyes. He trailed his hands to my wrists, where there was red marks from the rope that was used to tie me. He then looked at my face and lightly touched where a bruise was forming. "I'm my fault," he muttered, "I dragged you into this." I shook my head and kissed him again. Pavel didn't resist, but there's as just no feeling in the kiss. It wasn't like him, he was normally excited about kissing, but he just had no energy in him. "Pavel I don't want you to cut yourself," I insisted, searching in the emptiness of his eyes. "Vienna please let me..." He muttered, his eyes meeting mine and pleading desperately. I shook my head and pulled him into a hug. "Fine." I said.
He looked at me in disbelief. "If you do though, for every cut you do to yourself, you're putting one on me." He groaned and leaned back against the lounge unhappily. "I can't and I won't do that," he muttered burying his head in his knees. "Good," I said, placing an arm around him. "Let's go have a nap and you'll feel better when you wake up." He nodded and stood up slowly. He hung his head a bit, and muttered "thank you." I smiled at him. "For what?" I asked putting my arm around him. "For being my angel. For always being there for me, for protecting me from myself, for saving my life, for being understanding and patient." He muttered, putting his own arm around me. "You deserve to live Pavel and I'm just here to make sure you do." He smiled for the first time that night and sat down on the bed yawning. I sat down on the bed and cold chills ran down my spine. Pavel l down and crawled under the covers. I sat for a minute before lying down next to him. "You alright?" He asked, sitting up and putting his hand on my shoulder. "Yeah fine..." I muttered pullin the blankets around me.aid
I woke up screaming and in a cold sweat. Pavel was hovering over me and asking me of I was okay. My hands were shaking and I felt kind of sick. "Nightmare?" He asked wrapping his arms around my waist. I took a deep breath, "It was Damien, he tried to rape me again but this time he succeeded and then left me in this room..." I stopped there, I didn't want to tell Pavel the rest. Pavel kissed me and I shifted uncomfortably. "I'm sorry," I muttered, standing up. I walked I to the bathroom and washed my hands and face. Pavel leaned on the door frame and watched me. "You feel better now?" I asked him. He nodded and yawned. I dried my hands and face with a towel and walked past him smiling. "You alright?" He asked, looking up and down at me. "Probably just a little shaken up," I muttered. "I'm sorry for before..." He said calmly. "It's not your fault, It's just the nightmare and it brought back bad memories and well yeah..." I said sighing. He nodded, taking it in. "Should we get something to eat?" He asked. I nodded and followed him into the kitchen. "You look pale are you alright?" He asked, stopping in his tracks to look at me. "Yeah I'll be fine I'm just a bit shaken up." I said, hugging him. "You sure you're alright with this I don't want to make you uncomfortable," he said carefully. "Yeah it'll be fine, I'm just... I don't know..." I admitted.
Nothing happened for the next few nights, and Pavel only left the hotel room once to go buy food, but nothing much else happened. I slowly was able to kiss Pavel again and he would kiss back as per normal, but we had no idea what we were doing. "Are we just gonna stay here forever or..." Pavel shrugged. We would be fine if we weren't running out of money. He had a sandwich in his mouth when the phone rang. He picked it up, but I took it off him and answered it. He couldn't really answer the phone while eating a sandwich. "Hello?" I asked. "Dammit Vienna where the hell are you?" I looked towards Pavel and mouthed Dr McCoy. "Where the hell have you gone? Star Fleet are gonna suspended or expelled you if you don't get back here. You can't just disappear like that goddamit" he muttered angrily. "Remember that guy who was teasing Pavel, you know, the cause of me coming to see you that night? He came after us and all this stuff happened and we're kind of on the run..." I could hear him groan through the phone. "Come over to my place, you'll be safer here." I looked at Pavel, he shrugged. I took down his address and helped Pavel pack up his things.
We were on a bus heading back to Star Fleet Academy, but Leonard insisted on picking us up at the bus station. Pavel slept on the bus again, he had nothing better to do. It took us a few hours to get back but we made it. I nudged Pavel slightly and woke him up. "Hey, we're here," I muttered. He yawned and nodded, standing up and exiting the bus. Leonard stood there watching us as we exited the bus. "You sure about this?" Pavel whispered to me. I nodded and took his hand. He smiled slightly and kept walking.
It was no fun explaining what happened to Leonard, or Leo as he preffered. Before I even finished he was insisting that we called the police, but having a criminal record would have us kicked out of Star Fleet. I argued with Leo in the front of the car while Pavel was spread out in the back, using his PADD for something. "So how did you escape if you were tied up?" He asked. I explained how I pick pocketed the keys, and he scoffed in disbelief. I held up his watch and raised my eyebrows at him. He glared at me, "Goddamit woman."
