Chapter 20 - The Ace of Spades
Pavel was a genius at maths there was no doubt about that, but he was also a prodigy with cards and card games. When he was around twelve, he figured out some kind of algorithm for card probability or something. He told me he had a part time job in a casino, which explained his amazing ability to shuffle cards. Pavel once convinced me to play a few card games with him. I lost every single game.
Erik was over and having a drink with Bones and Pavel, while I sat in the middle of the kitchen, baking cookies with Joanna. Even though Bones insisted that the cookie dough was bad for her, she continued to lick it out of the bowl anyway. Joanna had a personailty of her own, and was a sassy little thing when she wanted to be. Earlier when we were rolling the cookie dough into little balls, she accidentally dropped one on the floor and I could have sworn she muttered 'goddamit' when she did. No points for guessing who she got it off.
Joanna waited for cookies to cool, while everyone else had started eating them. Erik was in the middle of some intense Russian card game with Pavel. Neither Bones or I had any idea what they were doing, or who was winning. They would occasionally say a word in Russian, but other than that it was eerily silent. There was a long pause of intense staring but then suddenly Pavel jumped up and threw his cards in the air. He grinned and grabbed me around the waist quickly pulling me into a kiss. He pulled away and grinned. "Woah what just happened?" Bones asked, uncovering Joanna's eyes.
"I won," Pavel said happily. Erik leaned back in his seat and took a long sip of vodka.
"What exactly did you win?" I asked. Pavel leaned in and kissed me again. "Woah," I muttered am I missing something?"
"We have had this ongoing bet about who is the better card player. It's always been me but he still tries," Pavel grinned. Erik rolled his eyes. "I won the winning a card, a bottle of good Russian vodka and $250!" He beamed, picking a card up off the table. "It's actually my favourite card," he said passing me the Ace of Spades.
I grinned at him, "what would Erik have won if you lost." Erik started chuckling from his seat. "Go on tell her Pavel," he urged. I raised my eyebrows at Pavel, who immediately avoided eye contact and went slightly red. "Pavel?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.
"I bet $500 dollars, a bottle of vodka and a box of pop tarts...." My eyes widened, "$500?!"
Bones cut in, "A box of pop tarts?" Erik nodded. "I like pop tarts okay, they're uncommon in Russia these days..." Bones laughed and I playfully nudged Pavel. "It's a good thing you won okay," I smiled.
"Okay you owe me an explanation," Pavel frowned, watching Erik platt Joanna's hair perfectly. "It's not that hard Pavel," Erik replied smugly, twisting strands of Jo's hair. Pavel rolled his eyes. "You've become soft. You've disappointed mother Russia," Pavel said standing up and stretching. "Have you stopped drinking vodka too?" he asked sarcastically. Erik muttered something in Russian, and began another heated discussion with Pavel. Joanna tugged on the bottom of my skirt. "Vienna what are they saying?" I shrugged, "I don't know I can't speak much Russian."
Pavel phone always seemed to ring in the middle of a conversation, and for some reason he always picked it up. He looked at it and put it back in his pocket. "I have a book package to pick up from the academy. I'll take you back with me it's getting late," Pavel said pulling on his jacket. Joanna made a soft "Awww' noise from behind Erik's chair. "Yeah," Bones said picking her up. "It's time for you to go to bed sweetie. "Will you two be alright by yourself?" I asked. Erik nodded, "Well be fine, we're Russian." Pavel hugged me and mummbled, "Well at least I am." I grinned and kissed him on the cheek. "Be safe okay." He nodded, "love you bye!"
Bones had put Joanna to bed, and I sat alone downstairs, watching TV and thinking to myself. It was starting to get cold and I really wanted Pavel to come keep me warm. Bones came back about ten minutes later, and sat down next to me. "You alright?" he asked. I nodded, "I don't know just bad intuition." I could feel the warmth of my phone against my hips, waiting for it to ring. I had this weird feeling that was about to buzz or something. I gripped it tighter.
I was right
It rang and I quickly picked it up, only hearing heavy breathing on the other end. The call was coming from Pavel's phone, but it didn't really sound like him. "Pavel?" I asked, waiting for an answer. "Vienna? Vienna, it's Erik. Oh god you've gotta come here. Please come here, to the academy, near his dorm!! Vienna please hurry, oh god..." I could feel my heart rate quicken, "Erik what happened? What's wrong?!" I heard him swallow on the other end up of the conversation.
"Vienna hurry, it's Pavel"
