Chapter 7 - Tooth Ache

I couldn't tell where I was, but it was a church. A beautiful church, with traditional high ceilings, painted glass and wooden benches. The room wasn't that busy, there were maybe fifty people in there at most. People milled around, carry handkerchiefs and tissues. I didn't recognise that many people, but sitting towards the back of the church was Damien. He had tears in his eyes, his head was hung and he held a flask in his hand. There was an open casket that the front of the church. I tapped on someone's shoulder. My hand sank right through them and I gasped. I turned my hand over, it was translucent and pale. My voice made no sound either, I was moving my lips but nothing could be heard. This was weird. I moved closer to the casket. I couldn't see inside of it, so I started to move closer. Around me were all these people crying and sobbing. I heard some people mutter in Russian. 'No...' I thought, I ran closer to the coffin. Inside lay the cold and pale body, of Pavel Andrevich Chekov.

"I still don't get it..." I said shaking my head. "Have you tried re-reading it?" He asked from up on the couch. "I've re-read it like six times and it still makes no sense whatsoever," I groaned. He held his hand out, not even looking away from his own book. I passed him mine and held it slightly above his own book. "Okay... It's because of gravity and lack of oxygen in space. It explains most of the symptoms, except one... That would be... Heat related..." He passed the book back to me. "You'd be a better nurse than I would..." I grinned. "Dah, no I'm not good with other people's blood." I smirked, he was really good at helping me study. He was so much smarter and could figure out all the answers. We'd been studying the whole weekend and we were so bored it wasn't even funny.

Pavel groaned, "I'm hungry, is there anything to eat?" He stood up and walked into the kitchen digging through the cupboard. He took an apple or something and bit into it. There was a load groan and Pavel dropped to his knees. "Pavel?" I asked turning around. I saw him and scrambled up, and to his side. He clutched his mouth in agony, with his eyes clenched shut and passed me an apple he'd just bitten. There was a large chunk of tooth in it, covered in blood. He opened his eyes an looked up at me. "Open your mouth..." I said softy, lifting his jaw. He opened his mouth, and his front tooth was half missing and his mouth was filled with blood. The gum looked slightly split and he was in a lot of pain. The tooth had been pulled out enough to damage the nerve, that's why he was in so much pain. I helped him up onto the couched and laid him back, running and getting my dental tools from the cupboard. "Pavel I'm not really meant to be working on your teeth unsupervised, so I just need your permission to do it?" He made some grunt that I assumed was an 'okay'

I pulled out a loaded mini hypo, made for dental work. I got him to close his eyes and open his mouth, I stuck it into him without saying anything. He gasped and groaned, sitting up quickly. "I'm sorry!" I yelled. I kissed his cheek and laid him back down. "Is the pain starting to go away now?" He nodded and a tear slipped down his face. I kissed him again and waited for the sedative to fully kick in. My hand lingered on the side of his face, and the other hand gripped his tightly. "You'll be fine, I'm gonna fix it okay..." He nodded, and his breathing slowed. I kissed his cheek and got a few other tools ready.

It took about an hour and a half to fix his tooth, it was really badly damaged. I looked at my work and smiled. "It should be right now Pavel," I said helping him sit up. I passed him the mirror and he looked at it. He said something but the sedative made it really hard to hear him. I passed him the PADD and told him to write it down. He wrote;

"It looks really good but I'm still hungry. When I was a kid I broke it and had it fixed but last night I knocked it and the apple must've pulled it out. Thank you so much ^.^ "

I grinned at the cute little smiley face and put the PADD on the floor. "You can't eat anything for the next few hours but you can have like a milkshake or something if you'd like?" He nodded and sat up rubbing his jaw. I pulled out a cup and some milk and dug through the cupboard for flavouring. I pulled out two, "chocolate or strawberry?" He raised and eyebrow. "Right, sorry I have the dentists curse that when I try and talk to people while they can't talk..." He smiled. I mixed the brown powder and milk together, watching Pavel's eyes follow the path of the spoon. I passed it to him, along with a curly red straw he grinned and did the hand sign for thank you. "You're welcome Pavel," I said yawning. "That was good practise for my dental exam next week." He rolled his eyes. "Let's watch a movie," I said walking over to the tv. He finished his milkshake and followed me back to the couch. "Show me your mouth again," I asked looking at his teeth. I could see that his mouth was still numb because his face was all droopy and weird. I pushed his lip down a bit. "You have really bad teeth, you're gonna need more stuff done. But the tooth that I fixed is going well. It must've been done by a really bad dentist..." He nodded and felt around his face. It was all rough and scatchy. I giggled, "you need to shave Pavel." He smirked and rolled his eyes.

"Wish me luck!" I said, about run into my exam. I turned away but felt someone grab my wrist, I looked back at him. "You von't need it," he smiled sweetly. The exam was easy thanks to practise I got on Pavel. It was on a holodeck, with a random scenario. My scenario was coincidently the exact same as what Pavel had, and took me a bit less time. I finished the exam happily, with a remarkable result. There were only eight other people studying dentistry at the academy, so I learnt a lot more with the small class.

When I exited the classroom, Pavel was leaning against a wall, looking around. "What's wrong?" I asked him. I just knew somehow that something was up. He sighed and passed me a scrunched up piece of thick paper. It was a brochure or a pamphlet type of thing. It had a sticky note on it saying "Hey Jerkoff, you're gonna need this - Damien." I inspected the brochure, the front title was bright and colourful and in big green letters it that said, "Sex, Puberty and You!!" I looked through it, it had large diagrams and pictures, so I quickly shut it and passed it back to him. "Ugh, that's just immature and stupid..." I muttered. "Ignore it..." I said, resting my hand on the side of his face. I leaned in and kissed him. "They kept throwing things at me and being annoying." I took his hand and we started walking. "Where did he even get that brochure?" I asked. Pavel laughed, and I joined in. "I've got work now, but I'm free later tonight, wanna do something?" I worked at a nearby restaurant occasionally. He nodded, "Yeah sounds great." I grinned happily, "I should fix your teeth!" He wasn't keen on that idea.

Work was boring, but it was over pretty quickly. I returned back to my room and rang Pavel. "Hey, where are we going?" I asked him. There was silence on the other end. "Pavel?" No answer. "Are you coming here or am I gonna come there?" There was still no answer, "I'm coming over Pavel, see you soon." I picked my bag back up and ran over to his room. I knocked on the door, there was no answer. I swore and let myself in. I looked around, the room was empty. "Pavel!?" I called out, looking around for him. I the bad was made, but empty. I ran towards the back of the room. He leaned against the kitchen bench, with a blank face. I ran towards him and hooked my fingers into his. "Pavel what's wrong?" He took a step to the left, and behind him was a massive bouquet of beautiful red and white flowers. He passed it to me and kissed my cheek. "It's a thank you present, for fixing my teeth and pulling me through everything." I was speechless. It was huge, and it would have cost him a fortune. "Pavel it's beatiful, but I thought something was wrong, are you alright?" He shrugged, "I'm fine, I just vanted you to come over and my phone stopped working." I looked a the gorgeous bouquet and smiled. "It's so beautiful, you didn't have to do this for me, but thank you so much." He kissed the top of my head, "You didn't have to do any of those things for me either."

We were watching another movie, and he was kind of spooning me on the couch. His hands were hanging loosely around my waist. "This is nice," I said to break the silence. "Yeah..." He muttered. "Vienna?" I rolled over to face him, nearly falling asleep. "Yes Pavel?" I asked. "I love you Vienna..." He said, half smiling. I lit up, and giggled. "I love you too Pavel." He kissed me, in a really passionate but gentle manner. It was the best kiss I'd ever had... So far. "Can I stay here tonight, I'm too tired to go back home?" He yawned while nodding. We were going to get up, but instead we just stayed on the couch and eventually fell asleep again.
