Chrisy descended the stairs Monday morning with freshly saloned hair... her Sunday evening appointments never missed by Francois. A new pair of skinny jeans wrapped her long slender legs and kissed the brim of her favorite Jimmy Choo jeans booties.
"Buongiorno," she greeted chirpily, then abruptly the smile fell from her face.
"Oh.... I didn't notice we had company." she felt every muscle in her body tense.
Josh was sitting at the dining table.
"Si, I invited Josh for breakfast...we had some emergency details to go over."
Her face flushed as she remembered her last conversation with him.
"What kind of details?" she asked curiously.
Was Josh helping out her dad or was it the other way around? Was her dad legally representing him for some reason?
"You know... paperwork, like you used to help me with."
"This early though?"
Her father purposely changed the subject.
"So, since you didn't want Miguel to take you to school you could ride with Josh, see, I'm always looking out for you?"
Josh was silent the whole time but he knew exactly what Chrisy was probably thinking 'hell no!'
"Actually I was just going to ask Kerry to pick me up..."
"But since Josh is here there's no need to put her through a fifteen minutes detour. I know Josh doesn't mind."
Josh filled his mouth with orange juice only to make sure he couldn't answer. He Shrugged his shoulders.
"Right." Chrisy answered flatly.
Josh politely open the car door for her and she stepped right in. They drove for a while in deafening Silence.
"About yesterday..." She finally broke it.
"...what I said about..."" That I was hot?"
"That's not what I said." Chrisy defended. Her eyes popped out at him wickedly.
" Okay... I was just trying to clear the air between us a little bit... feels real thick...and chilly... for some reason... I was just making a joke."
" Oh... well, you should work on your sense of humor." she retorted. Her heart pounded so hard in her chest she was certain he heard the vibrations in her voice.
" Noted... " Josh responded. "...you know if you would like to ride with kerry you should go ahead and call her, I swear I wouldnt tell." she looked at him puzzled.
"You would do that? why?"
"Because clearly you're uncomfortable. Your dad practically forced you to ride with me, and honestly I'd love to take you to school but not as a hostage or your dad's prisoner , so if you want to ride with your friends you should." Chrisy sat silently spinning Josh's words around in her head 'that was kind of a sweet thing to say" she thought.
" No... I think a little change is good now and then." The sides of her mouth tilted A bit as she gave him a small smile and Josh returned the gesture. It gave him a warm feeling inside when she smiled at him for the first time. Something he had never felt before in his life.
-------------She walked to her locker relieved there was finally so much space between Josh and her. Now she could finally exhale.
"Chrisy! just the person I wanted to see." a familiar voice greeted. "Good morning Mrs. Dawson ."
