Chrisy settled her focus on the fair skinned brunette woman. Her hair flowed thick and long at the sides of her head. And the bright red dot on her forehead right below her hair line reminded Chrisy of the pictures she had seen in magazines of tribal Indian women. A golden beaded necklace decorated her neck and her wrist was stacked with beautiful gold bangles. Her eyes were a mesmerizing brown, a hue lighter than Josh's and she wore a red sari that draped over her shoulder.
She was beautiful.
But how could this be his mother?
She wasn't Indian."I'm sorry..."She said to Chrisy's greeting, in the most beautiful accent Chrisy had ever heard.
"...I was trying to speak to Josh...there must be a mix up...""No...he's in the kitchen. He'll be back Soon....I'm Chrisy...we're friends."
"I'm Reena...Josh's Mother..."
She smiled at Chrisy sweetly and engaged her in conversation.
Why would Josh be hiding from her? She thought to herself. She must have been wrong. Both her and Kerry. The woman on the screen before her was delightfully pleasant.
Or was she?
Josh entered the living room taking a sip from the glass of juice he took for Chrisy, then he saw the screen and instantly he turned red.
He stopped in his tracks.
His hand froze midway from his lips with the juice and it almost fell to the ground.
"Maata jee." He wanted to clasp his hand under his chin but the glass he carried in his hand did not allow him. He could only bow his head slightly.
"Namaste..." he managed to choke out.
His mother returned the greeting.
"You look so different...stand there...let me see you..." she continued.
He ignored her request. He walked over to the screen slowly, and sat next to Chrisy, uncomfortably.
"Mother.... I have company..." He responded with flushed cheeks.
"I know...I met Chrisy...."
"She's helping me with...some stuff..."He said as he handed her the glass and She also took a sip from it.
His mother noticed they sipped from the same glass. Hindu tradition would not have tolerated that. She knew they had to be closer than just friends.
"Sure she is..." His mother replied.
Chrisy drew closer to him.
"Josh....your mom's white..." She whispered. Soft enough that Reena couldn't make out a word she said.
Josh smiled delicately at her. Then chuckled softly.
"She is? How'did I miss that?" He replied sarcastically then threw her a mischievous grin.
Chrisy bit her bottom lip in and rolled her eyes at him. Josh could get lost in those eyes forever. He would have forgotten his mother on the screen if she had not spoken.
"It's so good to see you Josh...how have you been?"
"I've been good...we've been good. "
"I've been trying to call you... everyday"
"I've...been busy..."
"We both know that's not it Josh....you've been avoiding me...."
"Not now mother...please"
