A perfect November monday morning had presented with clear blue skies, golden sunshine and Kerry, sitting in math class checking her watch for the millionth time.
"Can't it be lunch time already?" She said crotching her jaw lazily on the back of her hand.
"Your that anxious? Well I totally get why it would be a big deal for you..." Chrisy began in response.
"Am I missing something...'cause I just be bored as hell."
Just then the bell went and they continued their chat as they scurried to the cafeteria to meet up with their favourite twins.
"Are you kidding me right now? We have the cheerleading meeting in half an hour....the one where we hand in our permission slips for the cheerleading comp...."
"Oh snap....that was today?" She said as they sat down opposite Josh and Reid at there usual table.
"We talked about that yesterday Ker..."Reid joined in. "You said aunty was taking forever to sign and how much you want to showcase your dancing there to give you some exposure in the dancing world...your exact words"
"But it can't be today...I don't have my permission...."
"Well all hail your majesty Kerry Truman. She has spoken....and so we will all adjust our lives now because she carelessly forgot her permission slip..."Josh mocked
She shot him a distasteful glare.
"I have to go back...I have to try and catch up with her before she leaves. She goes off to Paris today. Oh God....Chrisy...promise you'll cover for me if I don't get back in time...."
She got up from her seat.
"But Kerry...you Can't..."
"Of course she will..."Josh affirmed knowing there were no powers to stop her from doing exactly as she liked.
Kerry turned to Reid.
"Well aren't you coming?"
"I sort of have...." he bagan. Then he studied her glare and started his statement all over again "...of course... I couldn't let you go alone..."
He grabbed his bag pack and they hurried to the parking lot together.
"So I'm finally gonna meet your aunty." Reid said as they escaped the unsuspecting school grounds.
"Who? "
"Your aunty that you talk about endlessly..."
"Aunt T....she's not my aunt Reid...I'm sure we had this conversation already...we didn't? My bad."
"I don't follow..."
"She's my mom. I'm adopted."
And just like that she said it. Reids mouth hung open as his eyes fixated on her.
Kerry felt compelled to elaborate.
"You know She's an actor right? She did a film once and her characters name was Aunt T. The name stuck and I've been calling her that like every body else ... pretty much all my life."
"Adopted?" Reid's thoughts couldn't move passed that.
"I'm so sorry....I thought I told you this already. Yeah, you'de finally get to meet her...if she's still there...which I'm doubting. Not the way I hoped you guys would meet but...."
She drove faster.
In a sweeter softer voice she asked Reid to turn on the monitor in the car.
She had just upgraded to an android lcd unit that worked just like her smart phone complete with drive assist. Aunt T was terrified of the thought that Kerry could actually use her phone while driving and possibly meeting in an accident. She could now just speak her commands and the computer would obey.
Another sweet perk...
Kerry could access her house from her car by her Home app because aunt T had converted their home into a smart home years ago. She claimed she needed company to raise her daughter who was proving to be a handfull at the time.Until this present moment she had no need to do any of this in his presence.
He listened to her speak her commands and he continued to look at her in awe and sheer amazement."You could always do that? I feel like I don't know you at all..."
"Well Pardon me if it just didn't come up...What was I suppose to do...randomly in the middle of an unrelated conversation just blurt...by the way I live in a smart home...oh yeah and I'm adopted..." Her nose twitched in agitation. "...can I please just check if anyone is home...without the drama.."
Then she was silent.
Her annoyance was directed at Reid but it wasn't because of him.
That much he knew.
"She'll be there Ker, and if she isn't it'll work out...stop being anxious..." he reassured sensing her uncensored worriment.
She opened the gate from her car and drove up the winding driveway. She parked in front and unlocked the door from her car.
Reid followed Kerry into the lavish Beverley Hills smart home. Reid looked around. He was awed. It was like a treasure box with everything so shiny and new and appealing. A portrait on the wall of a black haired beauty caught his eyes.
"Is this her?" He asked.
"Yeah, that's my mom."
She punched in a few items into a screen and curtains slid open to let outside in. Then she began speaking.
Not to Reid.
To her house.
"Good day Emilia."
"Of course you speak to it. Why not?" Reid mumbled under his breath sarcastically.
She sighed deeply, painfully.
"What? I'm not mad, just messing with you" he reassured her.
"I know...its not that...I missed her. Damn it!!!"
"Calm down. Maybe she didn't get far."
"Good day Kerry...and Kerry's friend...are you Kerry's friend?" asked the voice of her computerized babysitter.
"Yes Emillia this is my friend Reid....say hi Reid"
"So she'll save my voice...Hi Emillia..."
"Good day Reid....welcome...may I offer you some refreshments?"
"No thanks Emillia..." she turned to Reid "...Aunt T makes her do that...Emilia, locate aunt T"
" As you wish Kerry...locating Aunt T....I'm sorry Kerry, location not found. Gps Off. "
She sighed...again. This time a bit deeper than the first.
"Thank you Emilia.."
"Your welcome....you seem stressed ...should I play you your playlist?"
"No thanks Emillia. Im fine."
She turned to Reid with disappointment glazing her eyes. The type of disappointment he could not miss.
"Hey..." He went to stand face to face with her, he touched his index finger lightly to her chin.
"We'll look around. Maybe she signed it and left it out..."
"Your right..." she agreed after another deep sigh"...well....make yourself at home...or whatever."
She smiled at him and picked up a universal remote. For a tv in the spacious living room.
"Emillia..."she began. "Show me aunt T's office.Autimatically servailance of her mothers home office popped up on the screen. Kerry scanned the vicinity but there was nothing out of place. No envelope left out, no peice of paper. It was perfectly neat there.
"Thanks Emillia. Disconnect inside servailance ."
"Disconnected as requested."
May as well walk around and look she thought. It was lazy to think Emillia should do it for her. She was a computer.
She searched downstairs. There was no permission slip.
She went upstairs. She searched her mothers room and then finally she went to hers.
She was not alone.
