The next day at school was no different from the day before. Chrisy was on a cloud in Josh's presence and Josh was only complete when he got to breath in that rare air that surrounded him when she was around. The only difference was, instead of getting annoyed at Reid and Kerry, he got anxious every time he remembered that later on that evening he would tell Chrisy how he truly felt.
It was around 7 that evening when the door bell rang.
The girls had arrived.
"Ill get it!" Josh called out to Reid upstairs.
Josh opened the door and was greeted by the two girls but he only saw one. The one who captivated him with her dreamy blue eyes and golden platinum blonde hair that she wore in a high bun tonight, with tendrils loose around her edges framing her face. She was clad in a pink long sleeve top and white shorts and a simple pair of white flip flops. She tugged on the straps of the bag pack over her shoulders.
"Well...I guess we should just invite ourselves in then." Kerry finally said as Josh stood in the doorway, completely mesmerized and saying nothing.
He stood aside and she stepped passed him followed by Chrisy.
Just then Reid came down the stairs.
"So Ker and I are gonna go get some food...you guys want anything?"
"I thought you had an assignment?"
"Well I had to tell aunt T something...We've got loads of time for that..."Kerry responded only in time to slam the door behind her.
"I guess its just us then." Said Chrisy.
"Apparently." Josh answered. He just now began to see through their act. He watched Chrisy get comphy on the sofa. There was nothing else to do but join her.
Half an hour into discussing summary writing and parts of Speach Josh found himself spaced out.
"Bored already?"
"No...kinda...sorry."
"No that's fine...almost thought my hair was glowing again...or there were butterflies that I couldn't see." a soft giggle escaped her as she remembered the recent incident.
Josh smiled at her, as he vaguely remembered saying those words to her in the hospital days ago. He knew she was teasing.
"That was embarrassing..."
"So you do remember..."
"Unfortunately..."
"Figures you'de have to be high to think I'm a beautiful, glowy angel." She teased.
"I don't... have to be high I mean." Josh responded.
Chrisy felt her face instantly warm and she knew she was turning red. "What did he mean by that?" She asked herself. "...was he saying he thought she was beautiful? What do you say to something like that?" She figited with the soft plush pink puff on the top of her pen.
"Oh," she screeched.
"I should get us something to drink." Josh said sensing her discomfort.
He headed to the kitchen. "That was dumb. Who says that?" He cursed himself as he took two cans of cream soda from the fridge. His phone vibrated in his pocket and when he took it out it was Reid on the caller ID.
"What?"
"How's it going?"
"How do you think its going? Where did you guys go for food? China?"
"We're just giving you some time...so, did you tell her already?"
"Not yet, I'm going to."
"Then I guess we should stay in China a little longer then...already ate and digested Josh its been 45 mins...what have you been doing all this time?"
"Okay...fine...I'll go talk to her now"
But still, Josh said nothing. He sat with her and he wanted to, but the words just would not come.
Twenty minutes later. He heard his phone ring again on the kitchen counter where he had left it, and he went to pick it up.
"So?" Reid's voice greeted him.
"Enough with the pressure already..."
"Josh, its been more than an hour, I can't drive in anymore circles around the block. Five minutes and I'm coming home, and then they'll both leave and it will be some other time, make up your mind, suck it up and stop being a whimp, she's just a girl."
The line went dead.
He sat beside her again. Her beauty was intimidating, but so were his brothers words. Beads of sweat gathered at his forhead as though he was facing death.
"Are you feeling okay?" Chrisy asked him. As she remembered seeing similar beads of sweat when he got sick days ago."
"Yeah..I'm fine, there is actually something...I wanted to say..."
"Okay."
She set the books down next to her and gave him her undivided attention.
But where were the words he had wanted to say to her? He felt the feelings, he knew his thoughts but where were his words? They just would not come. He reached for them again.
"I...awww..."
Chrisy's eyebrows raised in anticipation of his words, but there weren't any. She wondered what he wanted to say. What could have been so hard. She thought of a few things she could have said to him. The moment would have been quite right, but she was afraid it wouldn't be appropriate. She wondered if he could have been feeling what she felt. Could that have been what he wanted to confess.
"Yes Josh...what is it?"
He tried once more.
"Well...I..."
It was no use. No words existed to express the feelings he felt for her, and at that instant he did the only thing that he thought would make her understand. With his heart on the line and his head on the chopping block he went for it.
He leaned forward and kissed her.
Their lips were like puzzle peices. They fit together perfectly. The kiss caught Chrisy by surprise. She did not respond immediately, her heart sped two paces faster, her brain shorted out and she was lost. And then she realized, and felt, she was caught in him and her eyes fell shut like an instant dream.
Her lips were like nothing he had ever tasted sweet, pure, heavenly. He did not want to part with them. It pleased him how she returned the action. And he experienced a different kind of pleasure, one that was new to him, almost unreal. He had imagined what it might have been like to kiss her many times but his imagination could not have conjured the intensity of the moment. To him, to her, it was pure bliss.
They pulled away slowly, for air. For the breath the kiss took away. It would be wise to fill their lungs. But they could only pull their lips a few inches away, the pull between them was so intense. Josh knew again he had taken an action and now he would definitely have to find the words to justify it.
"I...I wanted to..."
Chrisy leaned closer into him. He didn't need words anymore. She knew. Their lips gently grazed each other in feather light stokes. She held her small hands against the tanned skin of his face. His skin was soft under her palm and as their lips remained only a fraction of an inch apart, Josh mirrored the action. The moment was surreal. He dreamt of it but he thought it would never come true. He traced his fingers along her jawline. He felt her beneath them so he knew it was all really happening. She was really there. His daydream had materialized. He gently brushed his nose against hers. His hand reached for her nape and he pulled her lips against his again. They both floated away on clouds. Chrisy swore in the distance she heard angels sing and trumpets sound.
Josh had never experienced a perfect moment before, but at that moment he realized this had been it.
Perfect.
Then the door opened.
