He went home bitter, angry, frustrated.
His mother greeted him as he walked in.
"How did your date go?"
"How do you think it went mother? You knew us the most."
"Honey..."
"I have nothing to say to you..." He went straight to his bedroom.
Reena sat at the table. She fidgeted with her hands. This was not the way things were supposed to go.
Her husband came in and sat with her.
"I don't know Sai, I thought you said things would get better but it's not."
"They'll come around...we came around didn't we." He laced his fingers with hers so she would stop fidgiting.
"I don't know...we were different Sai...Josh doesn't even speak to me."
"Is this about Josh? Don't worry about it. He'll eventually learn he can't always have his way." He replied.
Without knowing it, he had broken her heart even more.
Josh could see that kayla was different. She was changing right infront of him. She had made a total transformation from always laughing, always being smart mouthed and funny, to being silent all the time. Something she never was. She was unhappy and scared. And he was helpless. He had done all he could do to no end. Tomorrow festivities would begin and there was nothing either of them could really do about it.
Kiran brought his phone to him as he paced the kitchen floor. It was just nerves, he knew it, but he searched for calm in every step.
"It's Kayla...she sounds happy." Kiran teased.
Josh took the phone as quickly as his sister said Kayla's name. She hadn't called for small talk lately like she used to. What could have been the problem? Why'd she call him now?
" Kay, what's going on? Are you okay?"
" Yes. Meet me tonight at Our Place?"
" I can't, you know how it is."
"Meet me Josh... please... in half an hour."
" Okay okay" he agreed.
He wouldn't resist her, and she knew it.
-------------Josh pushed the tired old door. And ignored the creek he had become so accustomed to. He entered the dimly lit room of the abandoned fortress.
"Kayla!" He called for her.
"Josh..." she ran to him "...you're here!" He heard relief in her voice as she wrapped her arms around him. "I thought you stood me up...the night before our wedding at that..."
"I'd never...wedding...right."
Kayla held him by the hand and led him to the place she had prepared for them.
She had layed out hordevoures and champagne for them on a spread table. There were two glasses, the beautiful gold rimmed ones. One was empty and the others contents was almost completely gone. She had already been drinking from it.
"Come...sit..." she urged.
She filled his glass and handed it to him. Then she filled hers again.
It was then that Josh realized she was all dressed up. No Sari this time, black dress tight and short with glittery straps. Candle light glinted off them wickedly. She had bothered to gather her long jet black hair intricately on top of her head. Her lips were devil red with lipstick that she never wore.
