Chapter 2: Gasping for Air

I gasped pushing myself up to find myself lying in the sand drenched in water. My sandals were missing, I assumed they had fallen off and my hair was plastered to the side of my face.

I pulled myself up and looked to the road to see Simone's car no longer parked there. I wiped my eyes as tears formed in my eyes, panic filling me. What had just happened? Where was Simone? Did he just try to kill me or had I imagined it?

"You must be wondering what's going on." A rich masculine voice said. I jumped in surprise turning to find a figure behind me. He had dark black curly hair that was falling into his eyes. He too was drenched, he wore black slacks and a half buttoned up white shirt and black polished shoes. He adjusted his watch on his wrist, checking the time. "You must be confused." He replied to the silence.

I gulped nodding.

The guy leaned down retrieving my sandals I hadn't seen lying on the ground. He walked over to me, and a salty, mint smell overwhelmed me. I didn't mean to but I breathed in the heavenly smell.

I coughed taking the shoes after I pulled my thoughts away from his scent "Thanks, I'm Hope." I said swiping my hair from my face knowing I looked like a wreck.

"Daniel." Daniel replied taking my hand and flipping it over to plant a warm kiss on my bony hand. I felt my cheeks turn hot as I dropped my hand to the side. "Yes, uh where is Simone and who are you?" Daniel finally brushed back his messy black hair and his daunting green smoky eyes stared back at mine intensely. "Simone is gone, taken care of. I was called here... I heard you scream." I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion for a moment. I knew he was lying. I frowned at him. "You're a terrible liar. Who are you and what do you want?"

I asked trying to sound ten times more braver than I was but my words had a slight quiver to them. " All in due time." He said smirking. "Now don't you need a ride?" He asked walking off of the beach and toward the road. I stood still where I was watching him disappear behind around a group of trees as he headed farther down the road. I waited for a minute before running after him, the lingering thought that Simone  might still be out there. I ran onto to the road and screamed as I was nearly run over by a dark black mustang. I heaved a slight sigh of relief when the window was rolled down to reveal Daniel. He grinned devilry. "I thought you weren't coming." He said resting his arm on the wheel. I looked around me noticing it was about to be completely caked in darkness. "Umm." I said in feeble voice not wanting to admit I was more scared of the dark than I was of him and the things that may be lurking around(Simone).

"Get in." Daniel said. Halfway through what he said I was speed walking around the car. I quickly sat in the passenger seat and closed the door.

As we made the thirty minute drive back to Maybrooke, I leaned my head against the side of the door watching city lights finally flash before my eyes instead of darkness. I kept my eyes open willing myself not to cry, but it was to late. I had blinked and a pool began rushing out of my eyes and making dots on my damp sundress and making my vision blurred.

I wiped my eyes when the car had finally stopped. I looked over to Daniel. He sat there fishing money out of his wallet. I eyed him curiously as he rolled down his window and I realized we were at Moonlights fast food in the town where the beach was located. Daniel grazed the menu before ordering a burger and a tea. I gazed back out the window as he finished through the drive in. I turned back to face him when he placed the bag of food in my lap. He winked at me. I glared at him as we drove out into the road." What does that mean?"

Daniel smirked at the road flexing his fingers as his arms flexed. "Just that you'll owe me." He said as we continued the drive. I didn't say anything back because he wasn't he getting any favor but I wanted the burger so I didn't agree or disagree.

After we arrived at my house I lingered in the car a half second. "Thanks." I said finally quietly.

Daniel nodded handing me my tea. I grabbed my sandals and the tea, juggling that and the bag of food in my arms. "Remember the favor." He said as I shut the door and he drove off into the darkness of the night.

I sighed walking into the house, surprisingly it was unlocked at the late hour of 11:30 which on Mondays during the summer was my parents bed time. I took the food out of the bag laying it out on the table In the kitchen. I popped on the light above the stove giving the kitchen just enough light so that I could stare at my food and cry in peace.

I must've sat there for a long time because the burger was cold and the tea was hot by the time my mom walked in groggily rubbing her blue eyes and wiping her messy blonde hair from her face. " What time is it?" She asked looking at the clock on the stove, unable to read it successfully without her glasses she sat down in the chair beside me. I looked at the food distastefully shielding my face from her, so she wouldn't see the tears streaks stuck to my face.

My mom swiped a cold fry from the collection of food sitting before me. "Sometimes dates go bad honey." She said softly taking the bag of food and tossing it in the trash. Yeah like they try to murder you I thought as she scrounged around the fridge.

I looked up at her wiping my eyes again as she opened up the lid to my tea and dropped some ice cubes into it. " I have that new book, If I Stay, that you asked me about." I smiled softly as she placed a paper bag in front of me. "Hon, if you want to talk I'm here." I nodded as she hugged me and planted a kiss on my forehead. "Oh and I bought myself some Ice cream but you look like you could use it." She said before making her way down the hallway to her room. I smiled at her as she exited, before more tears could fall, I got myself a bowl of Ice cream and sat sipping my tea and I opened my new book to its first crisply clean page.
