Unity Day.
It wasn't hard to believe that Aella really didn't want to be a part of the celebration like everyone else to reasons unknown by them. She took it upon herself to find Monty and down a lot of his moonshine before the "celebration" began, already feeling a slight buzz before she accidentally tumbled into Clarke.
"Oh hey," Clarke greeted, noticing her friend's semi-drunken state. "You're almost drunk already?"
"Seems like the perfect time to be buzzed, right?" she slurred. "Unity Day is the annual 'let's get drunk off our asses' celebration, Clarke."
"Well, I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday."
She grumbled and sat down, ignoring Clarke's mention of her 20th birthday. Although Unity Day held many great memories, one memory of it from exactly a year ago is what ruined it. Of course, who could hardly blame Clarke? It's not like she knew.
"You can't tell me you don't like Unity Day," the blonde teased.
"You'd be surprised." She laid down on the ground, ignoring Jaha's speech about Unity Day while the teens were listening but hoping it was over soon enough so they could get drunk.
She hated Unity Day with a passion and it made her sad. One memory out of many other memories...one event had to happen on the happiest day of her life.
She was born on Unity Day. She remembered her mother told her all about how her father got the news his wife was in labor. The man, in the middle of his Unity Day speech for his mother's annual tree tradition, ran out of the room as fast as he could. He was teased about it every Unity Day by the council and his mother because he was so flustered.
She met Clarke on Unity Day. It was her ninth birthday. Clarke and Aella met for the first time because their parents were council members. It was so awkward because neither of them had ever had friends that were girls. They eventually just started talking about how cool space is and their favorite colors. That was all it took for the two to become great friends.
She met Finn and Raven on Unity Day. She was running around the different stations on her eleventh birthday before managing to trip on air and cut her forehead open. Finn being Finn brought her into his home and patched her up best as a young kid could. Raven was disgusted by the sight of blood and finally introduced herself after the wound was covered. They made a silent pact to be friends forever after Aella gave the two kids with sunken eyes and hollow cheeks her rations.
She met Murphy on Unity Day. It was her eighteenth birthday. She ran into a young, angry kid while just running around the Ark stations as one does. He was in the corner, mumbling about how he hated the laws when she snarkily told him about who she was. He expected her to run off and get him arrested but surprised him thoroughly when she shared the moonshine she stashed away. The two grumbled about their problems. Despite her being from a higher family, she still had problems. They were joined at the hip since.
She remembered that he was so incredible angsty that she laughed at him then felt bad about it. She knew his circumstance and felt even guiltier. They swapped sob stories and decided they were bonded for life.
She smiled at the memories until Keenan came into mind.
She remembered how she was partying like any other teenager did when it was Unity Day. It was her nineteenth birthday and she partied hard because she could. She was drunk beyond belief when a handsome blond boy started dancing with her. She was so disoriented and tried to resist. He then took her back to his room.
She ditched the guards her father insisted she kept with her and no one could hear her when he took advantage of her drunken state more than once.
The boy took something she wasn't ready to give without her permission. When he passed out, drunk, she wandered around to find out that it wasn't the first time that boy committed that crime. His name was common with the young girls that were scared to death of men.
