So I guess I'm entered in the fanfiction portion of the Wattys.
Wow.
You know the drill.

Aella had stayed in the Polis tower that night, feeling funny as she was adorned in garb similar to Lexa's. She felt like she was intruding on a memory of Lexa if that somehow made sense. She spent a few days ruling over Polis and making preparations for Praimfaya. She also spent a good chunk of time forcing Archer to sleep.
A few days later, Gaia was announcing champions for the Conclave, Aella wishing she could fight. Why fight a fight you're guaranteed to lose? She wasn't always the best fighter, but she had yet to navigate fighting a leg down.
Gaia stood upon a stage with sigil necklaces in the palm of her hand as she began announcing champions and asking for their vows in war. She requested Aella, the Commander, stood beside her, so she did.
When Gaia handed a necklace to each champion, Aella bestowed a kiss upon their forehead in an act of good luck. She was hoping Octavia would win, of course, and felt guilty when she placed a kiss on each champion's forehead. She felt it was a bad omen.
Roan had declared himself as the Azgeda champion, refusing to let anyone fight for him, especially since he made his Commander a promise. He had stood upon the stage and vowed to follow the rules of the Conclave he helped create. Gaia armored him with the necklace and then Roan stood in front of his Commander, kneeling to the ground as the others did.
She placed a kiss on his forehead and stood him up, grabbing his hands as she did so to help stabilize him.
The king nearly chuckled as he said, "Is that supposed to be for good luck?"
"Yes," Aella answered.
"It feels like you're bestowing the kiss of death, Heda," he responded.
"Perhaps I am," she retorted. "Wipe your forehead before you enter the battlefield."
"It's too late," he said, sounding a bit resigned.
"Roan-"
"Octavia is your champion. She and I want the same thing."
"How do you know?"
"I just know. I do not plan to kill her, Commander."
"So you're just going to die? Why not let someone else fight for you?"
"No one fights for me."
"You're finally the good guy, and you're going to die."
"There are no good guys."
"But there are."
"Then they're stupid enough to get themselves killed. Suppose I am a good guy."
"You're an idiot for doing this."
"I fight for my Commander. It's not idiotic."
"I guess."
She closed her eyes and gave the Ice King a hug warm enough to melt his heart.
"May we meet again, King Roan kom Azgeda."
"May we meet again, Azripa, my Commander," he parted with.
Octavia stood on stage next, approaching Gaia.
"Accept the sigil of your clan and fight with honor as their champion," said Gaia, placing the necklace on Octavia.
