"You've been doing amazing lately so Dad and I wanted to give you something you'd really love." Dad gave me this rectangular box in purple wrapping paper and with a silver ribbon.
"Go ahead, open it."
"I'm nervous." I took the ribbon off and peeled off a piece. I looked at my parents.
"No way-'' It was the iPhone 8 in gold. I ripped the rest off and started to cry.
"Thank you Mama and Daddy." I got up and went to hug them.
"You're welcome."
"You know our numbers right?"
"Yeah. I'll put them in now."
"While you're still here, I want to establish some rules. Not a lot of rules but just enough."
"Sure Daddy."
"You absolutely cannot be on your phone all night on school nights. You know when your bedtime is, are we clear?"
"Yes Daddy."
"Also," My mom started.
"Your father and I don't mind if you talk to boys, we get it, you have guy friends. But I don't want to see anything inappropriate. You know what I mean right?"
"You mean pictures and texts? Yeah. We talked about it in class the other day."
"Good. We will also check your phone everyone and a while. I'll allow you to have Instagram and Snapchat. But no Facebook, and I'm not sure about Twitter right now."
"Yes mama."
"That's it. Go on, I know you want to talk to your friends."
"Thank you again." They smiled went upstairs. I decided to call Joy and surprise her.
"Who's this?"
"Who do you think it is?"
"ALLIE YOU GOT A PHONE?"
"Yeah!"
"Lemme tell everyone one else and add you to the group chat."
"Can you give me Joshua's number by the way?"
"Sure dude. You'll see it when I add you in the group. It's the 718 number."
"Thanks."
"I'm telling Daddy you asked for a boys number, when did you even get a phone?" Amaya said with her arms crossed.
"Like 20 mins ago."
"Unfair!"
"Let's go Amaya, you need to shower." Anne said ushering her to the bathroom.
"Amaya wants a phone too huh?"
"Yeah, she's a bit upset."
"You're in the group now." And that was the start of it all.

Mom and Dad aren't here today. I was very tired after school and dance. Having gym at the end of the day is the worst!!
"Allie come and watch Stuck in the middle with me."
"After I talk to Josh." I went into my room and closed the door. I'm not allowed to lock it for certain reasons, but if I could I would! I sat on my bed and called him,
"Hey Allie!"
"Hi. You said you wanted to ask me something."
"Yeah, I just wanted to know if you wanted to go to the movies with me Saturday." I thought for a second, Saturday is my birthday. Though I like Josh I know my parents want to have a 11th birthday celebration for me or something.
"Hello?"
"Sorry, I'm not sure I can go. Saturday's my birthday remember."
"Oh yeah I know. Maybe ask your parents."
"I'll try." I said smiling.
"Alright I'm going to go play basketball bye."
"Bye Josh." I held the phone to my heart and sighed. Love is weird. I pulled my covers up and turned off the lamp so I could go to sleep. It was only 8 but I felt like turning in because I couldn't get Joshua out of my head.
"I think she's sleeping."
"I'm not."
"Oh you're not, that would've been pretty weird." That was my aunt Hilary. She's very nice and sweet.
"Where's Mama?"
"She'll be home in a while. Why?"
"No particular reason."
"Suree. I'll just tell her that you needed her."
"K. But why are you here Aunty?"
"I just wanted to drop your present off. I'll be in another state when your birthday rolls around."
"Ohh, thank you!"
"But you can't open it yet, so I gave it to Anne."
"Aww."
"Trust me it'll be worth the wait!"
"Okay,"
"I'm leaving now, bye."
"Bye Aunty." She ruffled my hair and left.

"Yeah you guys can go." I nodded and drank water.
"You're really tired after dance huh?"
"Yeah, we do so much." Mama signed Amaya and I up for hip hop and ballet. She said hip hop was to embrace our African Roots, she also makes sure we are taught a little bit of African dance also.
"Why do you guys do that stupid dance class anyways. It's not like you'd need it because-"
"Cut it out August." My brother has been so grumpy lately and not like himself. I heard mama talk about putting him in therapy because of it.
"Mama, can I ask you something in private?"
"Yeah, sure."
"Mama-" Andrew said,
"Yes Andy?"
"You said we were going to go to the museum on Sunday, can we still go?"
"Yes baby."
"Mama, how come Allie has a phone and not me."
"Because she worked hard for it." Mama said as she put the chicken in the oven.
"But I work hard too! And the other girls have one."
"You don't always have to be like your classmates Amaya."
"But I just want to be normal! I don't want to have all of these stupid rules because of stupid cameras and you being a stupid actor." She crosses her arms and I could see the tears in her eyes that form when she's angry.
"Go to your room, you need to just calm down for a minute." Mama rubbed her back but she pushed her away and screamed,
"Leave me alone Mariska!" Andrew's mouth formed an 'O' as Amaya ran away crying. Mama put her hands to her face, she was crying! I ran to Amaya's room to see her crying and kicking up a storm.
"What Allie?"
"I just wanna talk to you."
"Why for?"
"Because I know exactly how it feels. Wanting to be normal like everyone else, but you need to realize how blessed you are, how blessed we are! You know, you were lucky to be adopted by Mama. She choose you especially even though she didn't need to. Same for me. Even though we're not normal we have to make the best of what god gave us." Amaya nodded her head with a face full of guilt.
"Now go apologize to Mama, I think she's crying." Amaya hugged me and went back downstairs. I followed and watched as Amaya and Mama hugged.
"Everything better now?"
"Yes. Thanks Allie."
Enjoy 😉 I'm posting in Spanish :)
