Chapter 37 - Later

Wanda was sitting on the edge of the dock when Pietro got to the lake. She didn't say anything as he sat down next to her.

"I'm sorry," He said, putting an arm around her. She was glad it was dark, that way he couldn't see she had been crying. "I know it's hard for you, but you need to take care of yourself, Wanda"

She knew she was being hard on her body, but she wasn't doing it on purpose. She really wasn't hungry anymore. She was so used to not getting to eat that now that she could, she didn't want to. And sleeping had always been hard, but being around all these people seemed to make it worse. There were more things that could go wrong, more people that could get hurt. And all those scenarios played in her head, over and over every night. She knew she had to sleep, but she also knew what would happen if she did. So, she just didn't.

"Please, don't go on that mission tomorrow" She whispered. She knew he wanted to, and there wasn't much she could do to stop him. But she would still try.

"Wanda, I told you we'll talk to the Captain tomorrow. Please stop worrying."

"But you want to go. I know you do."

"We'll figure it out tomorrow"

"Why? It'll be the same conversation tomorrow."

"Wanda, listen to me, okay?" He turned so he was facing her. "I know, you say you're going to get hurt-"

"No, I don't care about getting hurt. You're gone" He shook his head.

"No, Wanda. I'm not leaving. We'll be careful-"

"No, Pietro, we won't. You said that last time"

"But we all ended up fine. Look, you can stay at the compound, where you'll be safe. And if you aren't there to get hurt, why would I leave?"

"I don't know" She put her head in her hands.

"We can figure it out, later." She sighed and turned back to the water. They sat like that for a long time before Wanda fell asleep on her brother, just as she had the night before.

Pietro brought Wanda inside after a while and laid her in the guest bedroom, so the kids wouldn't wake her up in the morning. He came out to find Clint sitting on the couch with a book.

"How'd it go?" He asked, setting the book on the arm of the couch.

"Well, this mission is really upsetting her," He sighed.

"Did you figure it out?"

"I told her we would tomorrow" Clint nodded and stood up.

"Get some sleep, kid"

Pietro got up from the table where he and the rest of the family were eating to go wake up Wanda. When he went into the guest room though, she was already awake. She was sitting up in bed with her hands up to her face and her shoulders shaking. He went over and sat next to her, wrapping his arms around her.

"Wanda, it's gone, it's over. You're okay." He sat there, stroking her head until her breathing evened. When he let go of her, he saw her face was bleeding. He turned her head to the side to examine the mark on her cheek. It had never happened anywhere but her hands and arms before. "I'll be right back," He told her, going out to get a face cloth. He came to find her just sitting there with her knees up t her chest, tears mixing with the blood on her cheek. He sat down and gently dabbed at it. When he was finished, he took some medical tape and taped it up.

"How are you feeling?" He asked her. She shrugged. "Hungry yet?"

"You know, the answer won't change no matter how many times you ask," She told him.

"Well, you don't have a choice" She rolled her eyes.

"Didn't think so"

Pietro set some fruit in front of her when she sat down. Laura had left to take the kids to school, and wouldn't be back until after they left.

"What happened?" Clint asked, looking at her cheek when she sat down. She shrugged and ate a few pieces of fruit. He turned to Pietro.

"No idea," He told him.
