Freya
I thought that doing magic and something potentially bad would keep me up at night. Instead, I slept like the dead. After everything was said and done, Sabrina took off for home. The weird sisters were kind enough to send me back to my house. I didn't understand why Sabrina disliked the girls so much. I actually find comfort in them. They even taught me small spells to practice.
However, none of that matters now. Today is Halloween. AKA Sabrina's birthday. When I woke up, I tried to give Sabrina a call. She didn't answer. I tried to meet her at her locker. But she didn't come. Something is wrong. I can feel it.
I'm currently sitting in first period. For once I'm able to keep my eyes open. This class is actually kind of interesting. Maybe I should pay attention more often? We are in the middle of the lecture when Mrs. Meeks comes over the intercom. "Would Freya Hale please report to the Principal's office. Again, would Freya Hale please report to the Principal's office." The whole class looked at me and oooohed at me as if I was in trouble. I rolled my eyes and gave them the finger before heading to the Principal's office.
Standing outside the office was none other than my sister. It wasn't until I got closer than she noticed me. She came towards me and hugged me with a big smile.
"Hey Parker... what are you doing here?" I ask. She just smiles. "I'm taking you to the Spellman's. Come on." She takes my hand and heads towards the main doors. "Hey- what the hell? Were are we going? What did you tell the office? I have class-" "Oh would you relax?" She asks. "I get my baby sister out of school and she's worried about it? Oh and don't worry, I told them you were shadowing at your new school." She explains as we make our way outside.
"Parker, I'm confused. What the hell are you doing?" I ask as I rip my arm away from her. "Why are we going to the Spellman's?" She sighs and grabs me again, pulling me towards her car. "Freya, you're being baptized today! You and Sabrina need to prepare." I shoot her a confused glare as I get into the passenger seat.
It's a quick and quiet ride to the Spellman's. Every time I try to ask a questions Parker just shushes me. When we pull up to the house, I go to get out but Parker pulls me in for a bone crushing hug.
"I'm so proud of you Freya. Mom and Dad would have been so proud of you." She whispers into my hair. I roll my eyes and go to get out of the car. "You coming?" I ask with a smile. She just shakes her head and wipes away a couple of tears. "I can't Freya. I wish I could be there for you. But I'm not allowed to any Church of Night rituals. Just know that I'm so happy for you and I think you're going to be the best little witch." She says.
"I love you." I tell her as I go in for another hug. She sniffles and hugs me back. "I love you too."
And with that, I leave the car and head up the steps towards the house. I turn and give a wave to my sister before knocking on the door. Sabrina opens the door and pulls me in for an even tighter hug. Jesus, what is up with people today. My ribs are going to break soon.
"We need to talk and I need your help." She says pulling away. "Um okay Happy Birthday I guess." I say as she pulls me inside. We walk together into the living room where Ambrose is laying on the couch with a book in his hand.
"Ambrose!" Sabrina says. He jolts up from his book as sees us standing there. He fixes his clothing and motions to the couch for us to sit down. Sabrina quickly explains that her Aunts had called in sick for her and that she thought it was unfair that we wouldn't get to say goodbye to our friends.
"I'll still be able to see them, won't I Ambrose?" Sabrina asks with a huff. "I mean just because we're not at the same school it doesn't mean we can't be friends? Freya and I will be at the Academy of unseen arts during the week, but not during the weekends-"
"On the weekends you will both still be witches." Ambrose says bluntly. "We know that, but we'll still be able to go to the movies, same as always, and bowling and all the fun things we do together?" I ask. Ambrose sits up and rests his head in his hands. "Of course the Aunties would leave me to explain the hard bits."
Ambrose POV
I lean forward and look Freya in the eye. "Look, it is frowned upon. It is discouraged." I explain. Sabrina cuts in. "But you talk to mortal. And Hilda and Zelda, they talk to mortals." She says. "Yeah, we do, in passing, but we do not have meaningful connections with them. The coven forbids that, they will see to it." I say. Sabrina scoffs. My angsty cousin will be the death of me. "What? They'll cast a spell on me if I go to the mall with Harvey?" she asks. I don't respond and her face falls. "Ambrose... will they?"
"What about my family? They are all mortal." Freya asks. I turn my attention to her and I see the worry and emotion begin to well up in her eyes. Every fiber in my being wants to tell her that everything will be alright, but I couldn't lie to her. "I don't know Freya. I really don't." She just hangs her head. Her red waves block my view of her face.
"It's as if a veil drops between you and the mortal world, and eventually, quite quickly, you're weaned from it." I explain slowly. I knew it hurt both of them to hear it. It hurt me to tell them. "I won't forget them-" Sabrina starts. "You'll want to." I interrupt. "Time slows down, and they'll grow old and you won't. and those things are so terribly important to them will seem triviala dn pale to you. The longer you're a witch, the more you'll understand. But it's better to forget the mortal world."
Sabrina's eyes well up in tears. Freya still hasn't lifted her head but I can tell that she is probably in the same state. Sabrina wipes away her tears and stands up. "Come on Freya-" "Cousin where are you going?" I ask. She turns to me. "To call Harvey. We're having one last night with our friends." She explains. I sigh.
"Sabrina, it's not a good idea." I say. "Please Ambrose. Just don't tell the Aunties." She pleads. Her eyes are just so full of sadness that I almost cracked right there. But I didn't. The Aunites put me in charge and I will not let them down.
"Please." Freya says after a little while. She lifts her head. Her eyes are brimming with tears and a single one escapes and rolls down her rosy cheeks. That's when I crack.
