Jakku was a forsaken place almost ignored by the first order and the resistance. A desert place, no one would go without reason. It was mostly occupied by groups of thieves, criminals, and outlaws. Most of them would live as scavengers to survive. They could work for days only to be given a portion of a meal, if lucky.
Rey's remarkable skills as a scavenger flourished on the desolate planet of Jakku. The relentless pursuit of survival molded her into a tenacious combatant and adept mechanic. At the tender age of five, her parents callously abandoned her, or rather, betrayed her for their own gain. She bore the burden of insignificance, unloved even by her own flesh and blood. Growing up in isolation, she yearned for their return, clinging to the hope that one day they would reclaim her. Yet each night, loneliness and fear enveloped her as she drifted off to sleep, only to awaken each morning to the harsh reality that they were absent.
Determined to combat the haunting inner voice that insisted her parents would never come back, that they were likely gone forever, Rey resorted to counting the passing days. It became her sole means of resistance, a defiant stance against the disheartening whisper within. She steadfastly disregarded its forebodings, refusing to succumb to its pessimism.
At some point in her youth, Rey made her home in a downed Imperial All Terrain Armored Transport, Hellhound Two, leftover from the Battle of Jakku. The Goazon Badlands, where the AT-AT was located, was a barren wasteland where nothing seemed to grow. Once she settled into the walker, Rey salvaged working parts of the AT-AT for trade. She mostly just used one room in the walker for a variety of reasons. The walker also contained scratches she made to mark the passage of time, to remind her how far she had come, and to count down the days until her family returned for her.
Raised amidst the unforgiving terrain of Jakku, Rey not only acquired a deep understanding of the intricate workings of the abandoned spacecraft that dotted the wastelands but also became acutely aware of the perils that haunted the planet itself. She witnessed firsthand the adversity that could befall its inhabitants. Life on Jakku was an arduous existence, filled with solitude and ceaseless activity. Time seemed to fly by swiftly when she immersed herself in scavenging, yet it crept by sluggishly when she gazed upon the unbroken expanse of Jakku's cloudless sky.
On certain nights, an inexplicable sensation would envelop Rey, causing her to question her solitary state. It was as if a presence lingered nearby, just beyond her reach, waiting to be discovered. However, the unfamiliar and unknown instilled fear within her. She placed her trust solely in tangible, concrete realities—things she could grasp and comprehend with clarity. The intangible nature of the mysterious presence unsettled her, prompting her to remain cautious and guarded.
Rey reflected that that was her life: a succession of anxious moments interrupted only by the novelty of occasional panic. All part and parcel of trying to survive in a backwater world as harsh and unforgiving as Jakku. Deep down, she always believed she would die in Jakku without any family and friends.
