Kylo Ren stood face to face with the towering figure of the Wookiee, Chewbacca. It was a confrontation he had tried his best to avoid, a reminder of his past that he sought to erase. Yet, there Chewbacca stood, a tangible embodiment of memories and connections he had tried to sever. In that moment, Kylo Ren attempted to convince himself that Chewbacca meant nothing to him, that he could dismiss their shared history and the bond they once had. But deep down, he knew the truth. He was wrong.
The thought of dismissing Chewbacca, of denying the significance their relationship once held, burned within Kylo Ren's being. It served as a painful reminder that he couldn't simply erase the past, no matter how hard he tried. Chewbacca was more than just a companion or ally; he represented a part of Kylo Ren's former self, a connection to a time when he was still Ben Solo. Their shared experiences, loyalty, and friendship couldn't be easily cast aside.
He stood his ground and withstood the fury eyes of Chewbacca. Kylo Ren was through more painful and heartbreaking moments. He would not yield now. He was not wearing his mask. It was rare to find Kylo Ren without it these days. But after his encounter with Rey and the knowledge that he had to face Chewbacca. It was forgotten and ignored. He tried to push his mind towards another memory. The Wookiee had wounded him. That wound had resulted in a defeat at Rey's hands. If he had been at the top of his fighting form, the scavenger never would have gotten the best of him. That thought seemed to ease his inner pain for now.
"I have not forgotten that you shot me!" Kylo said as he took a few more steps towards Chewbacca.
With a wave of Kylo's hand, the Wookiee's shackles opened and clanked to the floor. The view of having Chewie cuffed made his stomach twist. He was not sure what was wrong with him lately. He removed his lightsaber from his belt and dropped it into the ground.
"Kill me," Ren tainted."I'm unarmed. Now's your chance. Have your revenge for Han Solo."
Ren's words were hiding a small truth. Indeed he stood unarmed in front of his father's dear friend. And for a nanosecond, he accepted his defeat. Suppose Chewie would take at that moment his saber and stroke him down. He would allow it. He was not seeking to die. He still had other plans for him and Rey. However, for a moment, it seemed promising. It surely would ease his pain and suffering. Yet, deep down, he knew he shouldn't be allowed to have the permissive escape from his wrong-doings.
The Wookiee was never arrogant. He made no move. He growled dark and low. His heart was broken. He was suffering from the loss of his dear friend Han Solo. And he seemed in despair, witnessing what Ben Solo had become.
"Feel that?" Ren asked him, trying to show no mercy. "It makes you feel alive, doesn't it? That burning. The dark side. It makes you powerful. You understand that. The scavenger will understand it, too."
Kylo Ren's keen perception allowed him to sense a stab of fear emanating from Chewbacca, directed towards Rey. In that moment, he recognized the depth of Chewbacca's care for the girl and realized that the Wookiee held genuine affection and love for her. It struck Kylo Ren deeply, as he knew that Chewbacca's feelings for Rey mirrored the love and protectiveness he himself had witnessed between Chewbacca and Han Solo.
However, alongside the realization of Chewbacca's love for Rey, a bitter feeling crept into Kylo Ren's heart. It was a bitter reminder of his past as Ben Solo, a time when he felt lost and unloved. The disbelief and bitter emotion welled up within him as he pondered the stark contrast between Chewbacca's genuine care for Rey and the absence of such love directed towards the young Ben Solo.
Recalling his interactions with Snoke, Kylo Ren remembered how the dark figure had manipulated him, convincing him that no one truly cared about Ben. It was a belief that had fueled his descent into the darkness and the birth of Kylo Ren. Yet, now faced with Chewbacca's evident love for Rey, Kylo Ren questioned the truth of Snoke's words. It seemed that Chewbacca's affection for Rey demonstrated that there was, in fact, a capacity for love and care towards the young Ben Solo, even if it had not been fully realized at the time.
