Kef Bir moon of Endor, 35 ABY

Rey accompanied the group to Kef Bir, where they encountered Jannah and a band of former stormtroopers. Finn was rendered speechless as he realized that more troopers had defected from the First Order. It ignited a spark of hope within him, knowing that even those who had fallen could still find redemption.

Utilizing the dagger's blade, Rey traced the silhouette of the DS-2 Death Star wreckage and pinpointed the location where the Sith Wayfinder should be. Eager to retrieve it, she intended to depart immediately. However, Jannah cautioned them about the perilous waves, advising that it would be safer to wait until morning. Time was of the essence, though. The Emperor's impending attack loomed near, and Rey knew that Kylo Ren would be relentlessly pursuing them.

Undeterred by the warning, Rey opted to venture to the wreckage using a skimmer. Scaling the treacherous terrain, she reached Palpatine's throne room, the designated area. Inside, she discovered the second Wayfinder. Hastily seizing it, she was suddenly confronted by a haunting sight—a dark reflection of herself. Engaging in a fierce battle against her shadowy doppelganger, Rey fought with every ounce of strength until she managed to escape by propelling herself out of the room, defying the clutches of her darker self.

As Rey stumbled backwards and lost her footing, she tumbled to the ground, inadvertently releasing her grip on the Wayfinder. Helplessly, she watched as it skidded across the floor, desperately reaching out with her hand to retrieve it. Yet, before she could grasp it, another hand, larger and clad in black gloves, swiftly snatched it away. The hand was all too familiar, causing her breath to catch in her throat. She lifted her gaze and locked eyes with Kylo Ren, who stood before her, his shoulders adorned with droplets from the surrounding ocean.

Forcing a shaky exhale, a sense of despair settled like concrete in Rey's veins. She had just escaped the clutches of her own darker self, only to collide with Kylo Ren. Today seemed to be devoid of luck for her. It felt as if her worst nightmare was manifesting into reality as if destiny itself was orchestrating this encounter. Determinedly, she sprang to her feet, fixing a fierce glare upon the unmasked Kylo Ren. Igniting her lightsaber once again, she braced herself to launch an attack against him.

He took a moment to observe her, silently noting the state in which she found herself. Was this the outcome he had secretly desired? Surprising even himself, he spoke, attempting to mask his earlier misstep. "Look at yourself," he said, his tone betraying a hint of astonishment. "You were determined to prove to my mother that you were a Jedi." Pausing for a significant moment, his gaze fixed unwaveringly on her. "But you've proven something else entirely. You can no longer go back to her. Just as I can't."

It was true, he could never return to Leia. How could he ever face her, especially after extinguishing the life of his own father? Yet, he couldn't comprehend why the past still held sway over him. Hadn't he made a deliberate effort to let it die? Hadn't he tried to kill it? What or who was responsible for continually resurrecting it, refusing to let it rest in peace?

His words had the opposite effect. They served as a catalyst for Rey to clear her mind and find renewed determination. Kylo Ren's lack of understanding regarding his own mother became apparent to her. Taking a decisive step forward, she stood her ground, disregarding his attempts to sway her. "Give it to me," she commanded, her voice unwavering.

For a brief moment, confusion flickered across Ren's face. He was taken aback by her continued resistance. He had once deemed her a fool for persistently fighting against the darkness. But now he realized the truth—she was not a fool, she was courageous. Yet, he pushed aside these unsettling thoughts, making another attempt to persuade her. "The dark side is inherent within us," he offered once again, urging her to surrender to its power.
