Sunlight streamed through the trees, making Jisu wince as she shielded her eyes with an open palm. The light was sharp and painful, yet soft and warm. She was glad that she opted for a short sleeve shirt today. Dead leaves crunched under her feet, insects crawling around, scouring the forest floor for food. The rough tree bark under her fingers was gritty and uncomfortable, but the smell of the fresh forest filled her nostrils, making her feel at home. Her eyes trailed up from the tree's roots up to the dancer above and its graceful branches and its umbrella of leaves. Maybe...Just for once... She took a hopeful step forward. Thunk! Looking down in dismay, she stared with frustration at her leaden boots. Oh, she yearned to take them off! Those boots would weigh her down too much, she couldn't possibly climb up the tree. She itched to undo the latches of the boots and let herself climb the great big rain tree. But, she knew that if she did so, she would fly, higher than the tree, higher than the telephone poles, higher than all the houses, so high she may never be able to get down ever again. Also, her father demanded she wears those shoes, so she wouldn't "embarrass him" by randomly floating away and never coming back. But that meant she couldn't leave the house, or go anywhere further than that, not without a rope, and that meant no contact with the outside world. On some days she couldn't help but hate her father. But she couldn't do anything, couldn't escape, not even for a minute. And so she reined in her emotions and slumped her shoulders. Someday, she said to herself, someday.
