I couldn't keep my eyes away from the window. Everything I was seeing was enormous, bright and clean. Strange buildings and streets. People were dressed all differently, in all shapes and colors.
I had only one question in mind.
''Where's the peasants?'' I questioned Charlotte, frowning my eyebrows in bewilderment.
''Oh my god.'' She raised her eyebrows in astonishment as I broke the comfortable silence we had, while she gave me a small laugh in disbelief. I was being serious though.
''We don't use the word peasant anymore. It is offensive.'' She answered while I scoffed, my turn to look at her in shock.
''So, what word do you say?'' I dared her, crossing my arms as Charlotte looked back at the road, driving at a normal speed. They call it driving when you use a car. It is a fascinating word.
''A farmer, a villager, a poor person? I am not sure but peasants, I don't think they exist anymore.'' I frowned, not understanding what she meant. She took us out of the city into the outskirts where you see grass at the side of the road, houses so beautiful and strangely unusual but looked the same. The colors were different. Colors I've never seen before.
''So you're saying there is no peasants? No slaves?'' I wondered, looking back at my lover who nodded her head at me.
''Nope, no slaves. It is illegal to have them. You can't own a person.'' My mouth fell open, my ears ticking up.
Did I just hear that? Slaves are no more? No person must throw away their dignity for a piece of bread or a cup of water or a place to rest their head in? It sounds unbelievable. Remarkable really.
''Is this place like utopia?'' I asked, smiling to myself as I hoped human have achieved peace and tranquility.
''No, Unfortunately not.'' Charlotte answered with a sad sigh while my smile dropped a little. ''There are still some wicked and greedy people out there. The ones who steal, lie, hate, rape, kill. We can't seem to get rid of evil. It lives within people and that is hard to fix.''
''That's sad.'' I whispered to myself which Charlotte nodded, giving me a half smile. ''I had hopes that perhaps we've reached the stage in our lives were we don't need to fight anymore.'' I added my thoughts, pouting at how peace may never come.
''Well, we can't exactly change the world but we can change ourselves and help people around us change to the better. I think....that is not so bad of an achievement.'' Charlotte glanced at me with a grin before turning back to the road while I smiled at her.
''Look at you, being all smart and sophisticated.'' I teased her which she scoffed in offense.
''For the record, I am very smart. I'm a genius.'' She flattered herself while I gave her an uncertain look while she narrowed her eyes at me with.
''Well, most of the time, you don't really act like it.'' I turned back to the window, trying to hold myself from laughing as she cried, holding her chest.
''My heart is torn to pieces.'' She faked a sniff. ''It's breaking. Can you hear it, Veronica? I don't.'' I turned back to her, giving her a 'really' look as she dramatically explained her suffering. ''Cause it stopped. You need to apologize to fix it.''
''You are so dramatic, very childish may I add and your heart is not broken. It's your pride and I am not feeding it.'' She stared at me for a long second before turning back to the road, trying to hide the smile on her face.
''See? I am not stupid.'' I grinned happily while turning back to the window, mesmerized by all the houses situated in a perfect pattern.
''Fine. You win this round.'' She dropped the act, faking a pout but I ignored it. She won't get me.
