James moaned as he stretched his back, cracking it before going back to do his duty.I sat on his doorsteps watching him chop off some wood for tonight. I rested my head on the stairs, averting my eyes away and observed my surrounding. I watched as the leaves on the trees swayed with the wind. I watched some of them fall and most of them trying to hold on for dear life. I watched some animals creeping by; mostly rabbits and some dears from afar. I watched dark clouds roaming the skies.
I shut my eyelids and breathed in, falling into the darkness behind my eyelids. My hearing sense immediately increasing as I listened to the birds chirping and the wind blowing at my ears.
It was getting colder and I had to hold my knees closer to my chest and wrap my arms around them, hoping for a little warmth.
It's been a week since my outburst and I feel guilty for letting my feelings take over. I shouldn't have yelled or acted out on a royalty especially not veronica who made it clear she won't hesitate to banish me.
I mean for fuckssake I do want her forgiveness but I was too hurt and occupied by my feelings to stop my mouth from running. She just frustrated me and when we kissed that night for her to deny it completely the next morning really upsetted me. And I now why; because I liked her and I was hurt.
''Hey, Charlotte?'' I looked over to James who smiled softly and sympathetically at me. He knew that something happened between Veronica and I but I didn't tell him a thing.
It was pretty obvious with my change of attitude; I wouldn't talk much or interact with him like I used to. I mean it wasn't mostly veronica's fault; I was mostly missing home.
I didn't receive a call yet from Olivia. It''s making me relieved and worried. Worried because I don't know what's keeping her busy. Relieved because I'm not ready yet to face professor's wrath.
Olivia probably told him by now about my whereabouts. If not, he probably found out. I'm just hoping that she's just too busy working on the machine.
I looked back at James, giving him a look, letting him know I'm listening. ''Can you stop by my grandpa's house to get us some fresh vegetables so we can make for dinner? You know potatoes, tomatoes and all that? I hope it's not a lot to ask for.'' He said and smiled apologetically.
I sighed, not really feeling like getting up. It feels nice being outside, not doing anything but enjoying the fresh breeze. I wanted to just sit down and not do anything at all. Just wander in my thoughts and think of how much I fucked up by coming here. I sighed internally, It's the least I can do to him. After all he did take me in when I was just a stranger. "Fine." I said and stood up, walking back inside the cabin without glancing back. I could feel his eyes on me until I closed the front door.
Even James knows something happened during that day in the castle but he choose not to say a word about it. I was surprised. I thought he was going to blow me up with all these questions but he didn't which I'm glad about because I don't want to explain something he won't understand. I can't understand. How can he?
I changed my clothes to wear something warm; some dusty pants with an old shirt that belongs to James. Thankfully, he allows me to wear some of his clothes since I don't have many. I barely have any but still managed to survive. I wrapped an old scarf around me for the cold and headed out the front door. James waved at me and I smiled at him without uttering a word.
It was a short walk but it still kept me thinking. It's been over two weeks now and I know it doesn't seem like a long time but it sure feels like it. Being away from my lab was frustrating. I loved what I do. I had the freedom to explore and work on whatever I wanted. One of the benefits of being the 'daughter' of one of the brightest person in the world. Everyone considers me as his daughter since he did adopt me and raised me on his own. He never got married. In his words 'I barely dated but every women I have dated wanted to get married and start a family. Nobody cares about over-population anymore! It's ridiculous.' He did have a point there.
