I took the flash drive out and closed my laptop as soon as I heard the door open. I looked up and saw Rachel standing at the door, her eyes sparkling brown but lifeless. She twisted her head to the side slowly, a whisk sound was heard before I looked back down. "What is it, Rachel?" I asked, avoiding her gaze while moving papers around on my desk.I pretended to be busy to remove her suspicious but unfortunately, I made her highly intelligent and very observant.
"One day, Olivia is going to find out." I dropped the papers from my hand and looked up, pursing my lips. I sighed and leaned back in my chair.
"Are you going to tell her?" I questioned my creation. Rachel is my assistant and my side project. I worked on her before working on the time machine, but never got to finish her until a couple years ago. She was made of the 240 design engine, Caleb's technology first electric design. She has a shield of titanium and was covered in silicon. She looked human but lacked the physical expressions to show emotions.
She is my robot and my right hand.
"Not unless you want me to." Rachel responded to my question and sighed in relief, glad that her loyalty stood out the most from her.
"I will be a snitch if I do so. A snitch is someone who would tell on another about something bad they did. Usually to stir up problems. I would not stir up problems." She spoke with a monotonous tone, blinking slowly before tilting her head to the side.
I couldn't help the smile on my face. I was proud of her and the way she thinks. Even though she was slow and would explain her vocabularies every now and then, she was mine. She knew that. "Thank you, Rachel." I told her before standing up and putting the flash drive in my pocket.
"A thank you is a sign of gratitude. You are satisfied with me." I nodded my head, looking down at a contract on my table. It was a contract for the future of the lab. Whether to expand it as the government requires or shut some departments down due to a low budget. I looked away, not wanting to think about it right now.
"Rachel, if I asked to do for me something in private, would you?" I asked, putting my hands in my lab coat pocket, watching Rachel who would twist her head again.
"It depends on the law. Breaking the law is a felony that I can be punished for and even shut down from." I chuckled lightly at her. I programmed the new sets of laws we have in her head but what she didn't know, is that nobody can touch her. Nobody but me.
This lab is the government's property and because I am currently associated with them and managing a lab for them, they have nothing but to obey me. We made the weapons that they needed for the war. The shields, the explosions. We aren't just a lab anymore, we are an organization for manufacturing weapons.
That was during the war. Now, the war is over, leaving only ashes of our loved ones and scars in our hearts.
"You won't break the law, Rachel." I walked to stand in front of her, taking the flash drive out of my pocket. "You will print the papers in this secretly and bring them to me today. Don't tell anybody." I warned her while she blinked frequently.
"Secretly? To hide something and not explain it?" I shook my head as her digital eyes shined with sea blue light. She was processing new information that she can only receive when I am speaking.
"It is to do something without telling anybody else. Just like what I am doing without telling Olivia." I explained and she blinked twice before the light was gone before nodding her head.
"You want it today, you say?" I smiled at her as she read my features before turning and walking towards the door. I heard her metal squeak as I turned back around to sit back behind my desk. I brought my chair closer to the desk and looked up to see the door close behind Rachel.
