"Well, we can say that revealing your identity is your new signature move." I sarcastically told Jay when we came back to the district after making multiple arrests at the treatment center.

"Shut up. It works, doesn't it?" He stuck his tongue out at me which I laughed at.

"Yeah, but it's a make-or-break thing. It could go down to shit every time you risk it." I reminded him, but he simply nodded since this obviously wasn't new information to him.

He had figured out earlier tonight that Tonya was the one who killed Sam Wells inside of the treatment center. She had tried to pass the blame onto Ellie, but we soon figured out the truth after Jay and I searched every corner of the only classroom no one had looked at yet.

It worked out for the best for everyone, especially Ellie who I was just about to inform of a good new coming her way. I squeezed Jay's hand gently as I went ahead and walked inside of Ellie's interview room.

"Hi, I'm Detective Davis. We briefly met before." I introduced myself as I handed her a bottle of water and sat in front of her. "I came in to, first of all, thank you for cooperating with us. I want you to know that even though you lost a close friend, you just saved an unimaginable number of girls that might have gone through the same thing you both went through." I told her sincerely, hoping those words would stick with her and that she'd remember that she really did do the right thing. "Second of all, I want you to know that we found you an amazing family out of Chicago. They are amazing people and we did a very complete background check on them to make sure of it. They are coming over to pick you up right now. Sergeant Voight will give you a card with all of our numbers so if you ever need someone to talk, pick a number and call. Alright?" She nodded at me, tears in her eyes and I smiled at her. I was happy that she could finally get the happy ending she deserved.

Jay walked pass the room and stood on the doorway, looking at us. "I'll give you a minute." I said, standing up and walking over to Jay. I rested my hand on his crossed arms and looked him in the eyes, "I'll see you at home." He nodded and turned to Ellie just as I left the room.

Jay

"Is that your girlfriend?" Ellie asked with a slight smirk on her face.

I chuckled and nodded at her, also wearing a slight smirk on my lips, "Yeah."

She chuckled and nodded at me, like she approved of her or something which made me smile.

"I'm sorry,"

"Thank you," We both said at the same time and we didn't bother to elaborate or repeat. We just smiled at each other, knowing what the other meant. I was sorry she had to go through all of that and she was thankful that I helped her out of it.

I bid her a final goodbye and left the room to go back to the bullpen, where Voight wanted to meet us all. Someone walked inside the interview room after me so they could take Ellie to her new family after she had been here for hours.

We were all sitting either at or on our desks, waiting for Jay to finish up with Ellie so Voight could tell us after a week of torture who would be the new detective within our team. I was excited and nervous at the same time, was I one of the person who knew them or was I one of them who didn't? Jay arrived a few minutes later, his hands rubbing his face quickly before taking a seat on his chair and waiting for Voight to begin.

"Okay, so none of you made any recommandations and I had an answer from mine earlier today. She's going to start working with us in a week." He announced, not saying a name yet. "She is coming back from New York where she worked for the FBI for the past 3 to 4 years. She used to work with us before." At this, everyone's face fell whilst mine stayed the same. I supposed I was the only one who didn't know her. I glanced at Jay who's expression was the worst. He looked like someone had quite literally just broken his heart.

I was confused to say the least. Who was she? Why did everyone act so weirdly about her coming back? I'd admit I found it weird as well that she wanted to come back here after working for the FBI in New York, but who was I to judge - I went back to a job that nearly screwed me all up. The thing that concerned me the most was Jay's reaction.

"As most of you have already guessed, Detective Erin Lindsay is coming back to work with us next week. I expect you all to welcome her warmly and put any bad feelings aside so you can all work well together." He finished his announcement and left everyone - but me - mouth hanging wide open.

"Uh, who will she be partnering with, Sarge?" Ruzek asked, looking over at everyone else to see if he was the only one wondering. When everyone glanced at him and then back at Voight, his thoughts were probably confirmed - everyone wanted to know.

"About that, Halstead, my office." He called Jay over as he walked into his office and I was left confused and surprised with the rest of the team. I didn't know how I should feel about what was currently happening, but I didn't like how it felt.

The horrified expression that everyone wore on their faces as soon as Voight's door close tipped me off. I now knew I was right to feel weird about it. "Okay, is anyone going to fill me in here? Because I am utterly confused." I decided to speak up. They all looked at each other, probably wondering who would break the news to me.

"Uh, did Jay ever tell you about his partner before me?" Hailey spoke up, fiddling with pens that were loose on her desk.

"Briefly." I trailed off, furrowing my eyebrows in confusion. "What about them?"

"I don't really think it's our place to say, really." Atwater answered, "Sorry, girl."

"That's fine. I'll talk to him later." I smiled at them and continued filling up paperwork as they looked back and forth between me and the rest of them. "Just tell me if it's bothering you all so much. But I can live with not knowing for the next few hours." I chuckled, putting my fingers down as we heard voices raising slightly in Voight's office. I scrunched my nose up at the sound.

"Erin is Jay's ex partner and uh, ex lover. That's why we're all so weird about it." Ruzek blurted out, Atwater and Burgess each hitting one of his shoulders, "Outch!"

"Oh!" I answered lowly, scratching my forehead, "Alright."

I truly had no idea what to say and neither did they apparently because we all went back to our own work up until Voight opened the door to his office and dismissed us just as Jay walked out. He practically ran to the locker room and slammed almost every door on his way. I had never seen him so agitated and it made me nervous. What was the whole story between him and Erin? Was there still feelings that I wasn't aware off?

I tried to shrug it off and followed everyone else to the locker room as Jay hurried out of it and left in his own truck. I sighed and grabbed my things, Ruzek squeezing my shoulder as if trying to show support or something. I nodded my head at him, showing him a tight smile.

"If you need to, you can always come over to my place, alright?" Hailey told me as we made our way outside. I thanked her and drove home in my own car.
