I walked up the stairs with Hailey, coffees for everyone in hand. I had woken up with a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach, like something would go terribly wrong today. Maybe it was just the fact that today was Erin's birthday. I pushed it aside and got up to go to work anyway. Hailey had been nagging me the whole morning about the whole picking up the cake thing. She claimed that it wasn't normal that I didn't really care about it now and also that I was actually doing it. I rolled my eyes and shrugged it off every time she brought it up. At one point she stopped talking about it.
We both sat at our desks and told everyone which coffee was theirs. Kim refused hers at first, being pregnant and all, but I told her I had ordered a hot chocolate for her. I knew Adam - who was over the moon about the news - wanted Kim to be real careful of the baby's as well as her's health.
Everyone worked on the Yates case on their own, trying to find something else so we could actually pin this on him. When I eyed my desk, I saw a new message saved on my phone. I frowned, knowing that usually the secretary had to transfer a call directly to our line. People who didn't have our cards couldn't usually reach us. I picked up the phone and pressed the play button.
"Hello Detective Davis. This is Gregory Yates calling, listen I feel like we got up on the wrong foot there and I really want to talk to you more. Maybe even change your and your colleagues' first impressions of me. Meet me at Harrison park, later today at 12 pm. Come alone, please. I'll see you there, Detective."
His voice sent chills to my spine and all over my body. I almost dropped the phone, before my shaking hands managed to put it back where it belong. My breathing picked up a little, scared as hell of what part I was going to play in his little plan. My strange behaviour caught the attention of my colleagues, mostly Jay and Hailey who both practically jumped up to my aid. Both Sergeants along with Rollins and Amaro walked out of Voight's office as well.
"What happened?" Jay's concerned voice filled my ears as I felt his and Hailey's hands on my back, rubbing gently to soothe me. I pressed play on my voicemail for them and waited until they heard the whole message.
"Do you want to go, Amelia? If you're not up to it no one will force you to." Olivia reassured me, waiting patiently for an answer.
"I'll be okay." I mumbled, "But that must mean that I am bait, right? He's hiding something else. He wouldn't meet me just for nothing." I blurted out, not believing for a second that he wanted something more to do with me.
"We'll find out." She added then turned to Voight, "Let's send patrolmen in Mr Yates' neighbourhood and have him followed up until the meet." She suggested which I thought was a brilliant idea.
"I also want Atwater and Burgess patrolling. I'll call down for more cars." Voight said, Burgess and Atwater smiling at me shortly before heading downstairs to change.
I rubbed my eyes and silently prayed that today would go as planned.
-
"You're all set. Be careful out there." The tech guy finished gearing me up and I thanked him, facing the rest of the them who was also ready. I put on my beanie and jumped in Jay's pickup in shotgun whilst Hailey went in the back. Erin rode with Ruzek while Voight went with the SVU detectives.
I kept picking at my nails during the ride as gently tapped my foot down, trying to ease my nerves. I felt too much pressure on me right now. I felt like I had to nail him now, we were so close. Jay most probably noticed my uneasiness because he grabbed my hand in his and held it on my thigh - keeping it from moving. His thumb rubbed gently on the palm of my hand, reassuring me. He squeezed my hand gently, taking a quick glance at me.
"It'll be okay. We're all here to back you up." He spoke lowly, parking in a street near the park. "Remember the code word?"
"Bananas." I answered, sighing loudly.
"Say it and we're there. Don't hesitate to leave if you're too uncomfortable or feel unsafe, alright? We know this isn't easy for you, everyone will understand." He added, looking at me. I nodded, licking my lips quickly before rising my head up to look at him. Jay glanced back at Hailey quickly before leaning towards me quickly.
He pecked my lips shortly, barely leaving me enough time to relax. "You got this, Amelia."
I sucked in a deep breath and got out of the car, thanking him for his words. Hailey tapped my shoulder gently as we crossed paths so she could sit in the passenger seat instead. I nodded at them, walking away to the place we were meeting. I waited a few minutes for him, hearing my coworkers ask each other if they had eyes on him as well as me. It eased my nerves a lot knowing that I could hear them. It made me feel less alone.
"You made it." Greg's voice spoke from behind me. I turned around slowly and nodded at him, smiling. "Let's go get coffee. There's this cute coffee shop down the street."
I hesitated. I owed it to all those women who died at the hands of this man. But at the same time, should I really risk putting my own life in danger to follow him? What if we were wrong about him after all? I doubted it, but I wasn't sure what to think.
"I promise it's not far." He chuckled, as if he knew what my current dilemma was.
"Why did you ask to meet here then?" I asked him, trying to make him change his mind.
"Wether you come or not, I don't mind. I'm going." He said, obviously knowing very well that I would follow. So I did. The whole time we walked away from the eyes of my team, he spoke about things that made absolutely no sense to me. I tried to understand where he was leading me with all his words but I couldn't find anything useful.
At one point he stopped, looked around carefully and so did I - noticing we were surrounded by trees and plants that hid us from everyone. Especially my team.
"You know, I'm quite sad that you asked your team to keep an eye on me today. Kind of makes me feel like you have no faith in me." Yates talked, anger very clear in his eyes as he harshly grabbed my arm. "Now I know you have a cake to deliver today, but how about we take it back to mine and have a celebration of our own, detective?" He pulled me closer to him and I froze at his words and his touch. I was beyond uncomfortable and I felt angry at myself for blocking - but I couldn't do anything.
"Bana-"
