Lowe’s voice cracked through the air like a whip.
“Nah, I know ya trippin’. You ain’t finna kill my child!”
Tiesha froze mid-step, her hand still on the doorframe.
Something in his tone told her this wasn’t just another one of Lowe’s loud, pointless arguments. “What’s going on?” she asked, her voice low but sharp, scanning the room for answers.
“Ask her!” Lowe barked, jerking his chin toward Koko.
Koko spun around, her eyes dark with fury and glistening like she was one blink away from tears.
“This stupid piece of human here is fucking around.”
Lowe laughed, a short, mocking sound that only made Koko’s face tighten.
“Ya really dumb. ’Cause ya carrying my child, ya think imma drop everything for ya?”
Koko’s lips trembled before she bit them shut, and Tiesha could see it—the thin crack in her composure threatening to split wide open.
She turned on her heel and stomped toward Lowe’s bedroom without another word.
“My child better be safe!” Lowe shouted after her, like that somehow made up for everything he’d just said.
“Lowe,” Tiesha called, trying to rein him in before he burned this bridge completely.
“Nah, don’t Lowe me,” he snapped without looking at her.
“She knows I ain’t a relationship guy. Why she gettin’ upset ’cause ion wanna commit? I’ma take care of my child but it don’t mean I gotta wife her up.”
Tiesha shook her head and started after Koko. Kiesha trailed at her side, both of them moving like shadows toward the hallway.
“And both of ya better stop walkin’ with ya ass naked!” Lowe hollered after them, as if that was the thing to focus on.
“I think he’s being stupid,” Kiesha whispered once they were far enough away.
“I know,” Tiesha sighed, her voice heavy.
They stepped into Lowe’s room to find Koko hunched over an open duffel bag, yanking clothes from the closet and shoving them inside without care.
“Koko, what happened?” Tiesha asked gently.
Koko’s hands stilled. She turned, eyes wet, and the words tumbled out like she’d been holding them in too long. "He fucked Heaven. After he knew I was pregnant, he fucked Tacha’s friend, Yola.”
Kiesha plopped down on the bed, shaking her head.
“He fucks anything under a skirt. He’s a fucking manwhore. He don’t even care about my feelings and—” Her voice cracked, the anger dissolving into sobs before she could finish.
Tiesha didn’t hesitate. She stepped forward, wrapping her arms around Koko and holding her tight as the sobs shook through her.
“Koko, I want you to answer me honestly,” she murmured into her hair.
Koko sniffled and pulled back just enough to meet her eyes.
“Why do you care now if he’s a manwhore?”
