kageyama and hinata finally closed up the gym after practicing well after everyone else had left. the two first years began walking towards the front of the school where hinata had locked his bike.

"hey kags, you ever had a crush on anyone?" hinata questioned suddenly.

"wha-what? boke! of course i have! why are you asking me?" kageyama exclaimed.

"do you know how to tell if they like you back?"

"no...i don't know...who are you talking about anyway?"

"you know the setter from nekoma? i think i kind of like him..." hinata mumbled.

kageyama felt a sharp pain in his chest.

the setter from nekoma? since when is that a thing? i didn't even know they were talking outside of practice games...

"kenma, right? i didn't know you guys were talking..." kageyama answered.

"yeah, we started texting a lot since the practice game and i actually met him before then because i ran into him on the street once before too...i don't know what it is...i really like talking to him, but i'm not sure if he's interested in me like that or not," hinata rambled.

suddenly, the raven haired setter disliked kenma even more than he already did.

"boke! how am i supposed to know?!" kageyama crossed his arms, pouting as he looked away from the ginger.

"forget i said anything...i doubt he's interested anyway...maybe i'm not his type or something," hinata muttered, unlocking his bike from the stand.

hinata mounted his bike and started pedaling away, heading towards the hill in the distance as he rode home. kageyama stood there dumbfounded, not quite understanding why he was so frustrated and confused about the conversation the two first years just had.

yanking his phone out of his back pocket, he began typing a message to one of his senpai.

hm. so i like hinata...

kageyama tucked his phone back into his pocket and started walking home. his shadow lengthened as the sun began to set, the orange and red hues in the sky blending together like watercolor. he put in his earbuds and played some soft lo-fi beats as he continued down the street away from school.

he passed yachi and ennoshita walking together and managed a small wave, to which the two of them waved back energetically.

kageyama continued walking home, his steps quiet as he turned the corner onto the road where his house was. he entered, pulling off his shoes and then walking into the next room over. he knelt down in front of his grandfather's altar, saying a silent prayer.

ojī-san, i miss you...you were right...i think i finally found someone who might be better than me.
