Riana's POV
We had potions and Draco had milk his injury for all it's worth. He sat behind Harry and Ron. Snape made them prepare Draco's potion ingredients. And he had to rub it in on how unhappy his father is about his injury. I had to hold my tongue to stop myself from snapping at him. Also Seamus told us about how Sirius Black had been spotted in Duff town, which is not far from here.
I was so happy when Potions ended. Hermione and I went back in time to take another lesson. After that we raced to the dungeons and hid out of sight. Before joining the end of the students leaving potions. "How did you both do that?" Ron asks us as we hid our necklaces.
"What?" Hermione asks him.
"One minute you both were right behind us, the next moment, you both were back at the bottom of the stairs again" he states.
"Oh -- I had to go back for something and Hermione..." I start to lie. Hermione curses. I turn to see a seam had split on Hermione's bag. I start to gather her dozen books as she mends her bag.
"Why are you carrying all these books? You haven't got any of these subjects today. It's only Defense Against the Dark Arts this afternoon" Ron states. Hermione ignores him and I hand her the books. She repacks her bag and we go to lunch. We had lunch and then go to DADA.
When we arrived the classroom was empty. So we sat in our usual seats. Hermione started to take out her books. While I played with my wand making different coloured sparks appear. Professor Lupin soon arrived and wished us all a good afternoon. "Would you please put all your books back in your bags. Today's will be a practical lesson. You will need only your wands" he tells us.
A few curious looks were exchanged as the class as they put away books. We had never had a practical Defense Against the Dark Arts class before. Unless you counted the memorable class last year when our old teacher had brought a cageful of pixies to class and set them loose. We then followed Lupin to the staff room. We ran into Peeves along the way and Lupin used the charm waddiwasi on him. It was quiet funny.
"Inside, please" he instructs as he holds the door to the staff room open for us. I go in first to see Professor Snape is present.
"Leave it open, Lupin. I'd rather not witness this" he states as he stands up from his chair. He strode past the class, his black robes billowing behind him. At the doorway he turned on his heel. "Possibly no one's warned you, Lupin, but this class contains Neville Longbottom. I would advise you not to entrust him with anything difficult. Not unless Miss Granger or Miss Adleril-Von are hissing instructions in his ear" he tells him.
Neville went scarlet. Harry glared at Snape and I do the same. It was bad enough that he bullied Neville in his own classes, let alone doing it in front of other teachers. Professor Lupin had raised his eyebrows. "I was hoping that Neville would assist me with the first stage of the operation and I am sure he will perform it admirably" Lupin tells him. I smile grateful he is standing up for Neville.
Neville's face went, if possible, even redder. Snape's lip curled, but he left, shutting the door with a snap. Professor Lupin walks over to a wardrobe and it begins to wobble. "Would anyone like to venture a guess... as to what is inside?" he asks us.
"A boggart?" I ask.
"Correct, very good Riana" he praises and I smile. "Now, can anybody tell me what a boggart looks like?" he asks us.
"No one knows" Hermione states. "Boggarts are shape-shifters. They take the shape of whatever a person fears the most. That's what makes them so..." she starts to explain.
"So terrifying, yes" Lupin says with a smile. "The charm that repels a Boggart is simple, yet it requires force of mind. You see, the thing that really finishes a Boggart is laughter. What you need to do is force it to assume a shape that you find amusing" he explains. "We will practice the charm without wands first. After me, please...riddikulus" he says.
"Riddikulus" we say together.
"Very good. But that was the easy part, I'm afraid. You see, the word alone is not enough. And this is where you come in, Neville" Lupin states. "First things first: what would you say is the thing that frightens you most in the world?" he asks once Neville stepped forward.
Neville's lips moved, but no noise came out. "Sorry?" Lupin says.
"Professor Snape" Neville says clearly. Nearly everyone laughed. Even Neville grinned apologetically. Professor Lupin, however, looked thoughtful.
"Professor Snape. Yes, frightens all" he says. "I believe you also live with your grandmother" he adds.
"Yes, but I don't want that boggart to turn into her either" Neville states and we all chuckle.
"No... it won't. I want you to picture her clothes. Only her clothes, very clearly, in your mind" Lupin tells him.
"She carries a red handbag..." Neville starts to describe.
"We don't need to hear. As long as you see it, we'll see it. Now, when I open that wardrobe... here's what I want you to do" Lupin tells him. I use my advance hearing to listen. "Imagine Professor Snape in your grandmother's clothes" he whispers to Neville and Neville looks at him shocked. "Can you do that?" Lupin asks him and Neville nods his head.
"If Neville is successful, the Boggart is likely to shift his attention to each of us in turn. I would like all of you to take a moment now to think of the thing that scares you most, and imagine how you might force it to look comical" Lupin tells us. My worst fear is people find out what I am and rejecting me. Can't really make that entertaining.
We are soon all ready and step back so the boggart has a clear view of Neville. ""On the count of three, Neville" Lupin says and counts to three. The wardrobe burst open. Hook-nosed and menacing, Professor Snape stepped out.
"R -- r -- riddikulus!" Neville squeaks pointing his wand at the boggart. Snape stumbled; he was wearing a long, lace-trimmed dress and a towering hat topped with a moth-eaten vulture, and he was swinging a huge crimson handbag. There was a roar of laughter.
"Fay" Lupin calls and she steps forward.Snape rounded on her. There was another crack, and where he had stood was a blood covered vampire stood in his place.
"Riddikulus" she says and it turns into a cute fluffy bunny.
"And next! Step up" Lupin calls and Ron steps forward. A giant spider appears and he says the incantation. The spider gets roller blades on it feet and falls onto his big stomach unable to get up. Seamus goes next and it turns into a banshee, which he makes mute. Harry goes to face the boggart and Lupin blocks the boggart's view of him.
It turns into a full moon. "Riddikulus" he says and it turns into a balloon. It flew back into the wardrobe and he closes it. Locking it. "Well done, everyone...Let me see...five points to Gryffindor for every person to tackle the Boggart. Then five each to Hermione and Riana for answering the questions at the beginning of the class" he states.
"Very well, everyone, an excellent lesson. Homework, kindly read the chapter on Boggarts and summarize it for me...to be handed in on Monday. That will be all" he tells us and we leave.
