Riana's POV
Umbridge somehow found out about our meeting and made a new educational decree. Banning all social groups and teams, including quidditch without her permission. Angelina had to go to McGonagall, who went to Dumbledore to allow Gryffindor to play quidditch. We all decided to go on without secret Defense Against the Dark Arts group. We spread the news around, but Hermione and I have been working on another way to communicate with the members. Without risk of being over heard.
Anyway it's time for Harry to give us our first defense lesson. And he's chosen the room of requirement for our meeting place. A perfect place, don't know why I didn't think of it before. Apparently Dobby had shown it to him. It had everything we needed to practice, there were even dark detectors. Even books about defensive spells. Once everyone had arrived, Harry stood up to address the group.
"This is the place we've found for practice sessions, and you've--er--obviously found it OK" he states.
"It's fantastic" Cho states and the others agree.
"It's bizarre" Fred states and I chuckle. "We once hid from Filch in here, remember, George? But it was just a broom cupboard then" he tells his brother. Who nods his head.
"It becomes whatever the person looking for it needs" I tell him.
"Hey, Harry, what's this stuff?" Dean asks pointing to the dark detectors. Harry walks over to them.
"Dark detectors" Harry answers. "Basically they all show when Dark wizards or enemies are around, but you don't want to rely on them too much, they can be fooled" he explains. He gazed for a moment into the cracked Foe-Glass; then turned his back on it.
"Well, I've been thinking about the sort of stuff we ought to do first and--er..." he starts to say. When Hermione raises her hand. "What Hermione?" he asks her.
"I think we ought to elect a leader" Hermione states.
"Not a bad idea" I state.
"Harry's leader" Cho tells us.
"Yes, but I think we ought to vote on it properly" Hermione states. "It makes it formal and it gives him authority. So--everyone who thinks Harry ought to be our leader?" she asks. Everyone raised their hand. Afterwards we choose a name. Dumbledore's Army or D.A for short.
Harry then told us to break off into pairs and practice disarming. Zacharias Smith was not impressed, but shut up when he heard how it saved Harry's life in June. "Hi Neville, want to partner up?" I ask.
"Sure" he says with a smile. We find a spot. "What's the incantation?" he asks me.
"Expelliarmus, I'll demonstrate" I tell him. We draw our wands and bow. "Expelliarmus" I say and his wand shots out of his hand. I catch it. "See simple, you try" I say tossing him his wand. He catches it.
I lose focus as I long at the others practicing the spell. Harry had been right to suggest we practice the basics first. There is a lot of shoddy spell work going on; many people were not succeeding in Disarming their opponents at all. But merely causing them to jump backwards a few paces or wince as their feeble spell whooshed over them.
Suddenly my wand shots out of my hand. "Yes, I did it!" Neville cheers.
"Well done Neville" I praise. "Accio" I say and my wand flies into my hand. Neville looks at me shocked. I place a finger over my mouth, "our little secret" I tell him and he nods his head. "Lets continue" I tell him and disarm him.
(Time skip)
A whistle sounds for a second time and we all look at Harry. "Well, that was pretty good" he tells us. "But we've overrun, we'd better leave it here. Same time, same place next week?" he asks.
"Sooner!" Dean exclaims and others agree.
"The Quidditch season's about to start, we need team practices too" Angelina reminds us.
"Let's say next Wednesday night, then" Harry states. "We can decide on additional meetings then. Come on, we'd better get going" he adds taking out the Marauders map. He let them all leave in threes and fours, watching their tiny dots anxiously to see that they returned safely to their dormitories: the Hufflepuffs to the basement corridor that also led to the kitchens; the Ravenclaws to a tower on the west side of the castle, and the Gryffindors along the corridor to the Fat Lady's portrait.
Soon only Harry, Hermione, Ron and I are left. "That was really, really good, Harry" Hermione praises him.
"Agreed" I state as I take out a blood pop.
"Yeah, it was!" Ron exclaims. We left the room and watched the door melt away. "Did you see me disarm Hermione, Harry?" he asks as we set off.
"Only once" Hermione states. "I got you loads more than you got me" she adds.
"I did not only get you once, I got you at least three times" he complains.
"Well, if you're counting the one where you tripped over your own feet and knocked the wand out of my hand" Hermione grumbles. They argued all the way back to the common room, but I notice Harry was not listening to them. I wasn't either, wish they'd date already. We reached Gryffindor tower safely. Hermione and I did our homework together before calling it a night.
