It's 3:50 and all of us are getting into the van. I got into the front drivers side and Zack sat in the shotgun.
"Morgan where am I dropping you off?" I asked her. "The outdoor mall on 9th street, Starbucks specifically." She said.
"Alright! Does everyone have their stuff?" I asked. Everyone nodded and we made our way to the mall. "Avalon, why are you dropping her off here?" Zack whispered to me. "First crush, first 'quote on quote' date." I whispered back at him.
Zack smiled and even gave a little laugh. When we got to the mall, I saw all of Morgan's friends waving to her. She got out of the van and I rolled down my window. She went straight next to a guy that I was thinking was Jeremy.
"Bye guys, have fun! See you later Morgan!" I said smiling. All her friends waved bye to me and Morgan yelled. "LOVE YOU AVALON."
As I was pulling away from the front of Starbucks, I yelled out. "LOVE YOU TOO MORGAN!" I then pulled out of the mall and then to the baseball field.
When we got to the field, their coach did the regular greetings. "Hey guys, oh. Hey Avalon! Planning to play today?" He said laughing. "Hopefully not." I said, not wanting anyone else to get hurt.
"Well you're good, maybe you could come to more practices and games as an intimidation tactic." Coach said to me. "I'd be glad to but I need to watch the kids." I said. "Bring them along! We could use some help around here." Coach said.
"Well sure, then. I'll be here next practice." I said. "Avalon, you all could sit in the dugout with us. There's more than enough room in there." He said.
I asked the kids and they all smiled and nodded. They all ran into the dugout and sat near the far end. I sat nearest to home plate.
"Hey Avalon, can you run our batting order over to the other team?" Coach asked. "Yeah sure." I said. He handed me the slip and I ran to the other dugout.
"Hey coach? This is our batting order." I said handing it to him. "Oh right, let me go get ours." He said. I stood waiting and all the guys were staring at me.
I heard them whispering. "Yo that is her." "Her? She's the one who hit the home run at that other game?" "She can't be." "I swear she is." "Ask her."
They then faced me. "Hey, you. Are you Avalon who hit that home run?" A guy asked me. "Guilty as charged." I said smiling. "But you're too cute." A guy said. "Stop assuming and get to know me better before you say anything else." I said.
Their coach came back and handed me the slip. "Nice going Pete, now you got her pissed. If she plays then we lose." A guy said.
"Hey guys, see you on the field maybe?" I said while walking away with a wink. Just to scare them a little.
I walked into the dugout and sat. "What was that all about?" Zack asked me. "They asked me if I was the girl who hit the home run at the other game, I said yeah, and a guy said I was to cute to hit a ball like that. His friend then punched him because now that I'm quote on quote pissed, and that we are going to beat them." I said laughing.
"Wait so they're scared of you?" Coach asked. "I guess so." I said. "Derek, Zack, talk about today's game with the guys. Avalon, come with me." Coach said.
I followed coach to his car. "What size cleat are you?" He asked me. "7 ." I said. "Here's a 6 1/2 in mens, it might be loose." He said.
"What size shirt?" He asked. "Medium." I said. "Medium?" He asked. "I like my shirts a little but looser." I said. "These are men's sizes, so here's a small, and here's a slider, are you a lefty or righty?" He asked.
"Righty." I said, he tossed me a mit."Wait, coach. You want me to play today?" I asked. "I don't see why not, if you don't want to just sit in there with us, it'll give the other team a little scare." He said. I got into my van and changed and then ran out to the field. I put my hair up in a ponytail.
"Avalon, go get the batting list so we could make changes." He said.
I ran back over to the team. "Coach, my coach wants the order back so we could make some changes." I said. The guy Pete face palmed and said, "Yeah guys, we lost."
Their coach handed me the slip and I ran it to coach and he put me as fourth batter and moved everyone else down, and I ran it back to the other coach. "Good luck guys." I said smiling.
"Avalon, what positions do you play in softball?" Coach asked me.
"First, third, and catcher." I said. "You and Sully will rotate catching, alright? I don't know if I should throw you in right away because catching for softball and baseball are very different." Coach said. "Don't worry, I actually caught for a baseball league in high school because softball wasn't competitive enough for me." Coach laughed and said, "Well damn then kid, but that's only if Sully's okay with it, I don't need to bud in." "Yo, it's completely fine with me." Sully said and smiled.
"Zack, take Avalon to the out field and warm her arm up, the rest of you guys go to the infield and let's go through some drills." Coach said.
Zack took a baseball and we started throwing back and forth. "This is weird." I said. "What's weird?" Zack asked.
"All the guys on the other team are like terrified of me, but I mean it's more so funny."
