~third POV~

"How is he?" Two asked with a hint of worry in his voice. Steve, Soda, and Johnny followed behind him.
"Who?" Pony asked.
"Dallas of course!" Two hissed but quietly, "Who else would I be talkin' about?"
"Ever since he saw Y/N two days ago, he's been super depressed." Darry said as he walked into the kitchen where they were talking, "He hasn't moved out of that spot on the couch. He's only left to go to the bathroom but that's about it. I offered him some food but he barely ate anything. And then early today when he got the news that Y/N was now in a coma, he froze like a scarecrow. I know he's scared sick for Y/N but this, this is just too far. And he won't even speak a single word to any of us or so much as give a damn of what we have to say. It ain't like him and I'm starting to get worried."
They all glanced over to Dally how slumped on the couch, baggy eyed and grey.
"It's time we get him off his feet." Steve said quietly, "If he doesn't move anytime soon it'll kill him."
"But if we move him, he'll kill us!" Two whisper-shouted.
"Let's just not take him out of the house then." Pony said, "Maybe somewhere else that isn't the living room, like our kitchen."
"I guess." Darry shrugged.
"Well, it's worth a shot." Soda said with a smile.
"Johnny, why don't you tell Dal." Darry suggested.
"Me?" Johnny asked quietly.
"You're the only person that he really listens to and he'd never hurt you." Darry said.
"But I haven't talked to him since the night of the rumble." Johnny said nervously.
"Come on, Johnnycake." Steve patted Johnny's back, "He'll totally listen to you. Just say that there's cake and some beers in the cooler and that he could go up and get some if he wanted."
"Well, okay." Johnny agreed after a bit.
"We should probably spread out." Pony suggested with a slight chuckle, "We're all here in the kitchen like a pack of sardines and when he sees us, he won't even step inside."
Everyone realized and immediately left the kitchen, dispersing around the house while acting normal.
Johnny gulped and started making his way to Dallas on his crutches.
"Um, hey Dal." Johnny said softly with a small smile, "So...there's some food in the cooler, ya wanna come get some with me?"
Johnny shifted in his crutches nervously, waiting for Dallas to answer. Finally, Dallas gave a nod.
Johnny looked at him worriedly his friend never acted like this before. Dallas would always give his grin or a smirk and say a cool, tough greeting. And he would always look straight into the person's eyes. Now he was the complete opposite.
Dallas sluggishly got off the couch and walked to the kitchen. Johnny followed with an uneasy feeling.
Soda was back in the kitchen to help.
"Want chocolate cake?" He asked brightly.
Dallas nodded in reply.
"Slice or chunk?" Soda asked, laughing, "Or maybe you want whole?"
"Slice is fine." Dallas said so very duly.
"Oh, okay." Soda cleared his throat, feeling awkward.
Soda took out a kitchen knife to cut the cake. He placed it on the counter as he knelt down to dig for the chocolate cake.
While Soda carried a happy tune while finding the cake, Dallas had other plans.
He stared at the knife without blinking. Johnny watched as the uneasy feeling tugged at him more.
Dallas slowly reached for the knife. When he held onto it with two hands, he raised it up.
Johnny's eyes widened greatly as he saw Dallas aim the blade towards his heart.
"Dal! No!" Johnny blurted as he tried to move towards him but the crutches slowed him down.
Soda immediately spun around and gasped. He tackled him before the knife was about to pierce into Dal's chest.
They fell to the ground with a hard thud, rolling around on the floor. Soda strained as he used all his might to pry the knife off of Dally's hands. But Dallas refused and held onto it tightly while still trying to stab himself.
Everyone else came scampering into the kitchen after hearing the commotion. Darry, Two, and Steve slid to the ground to help though they had no idea what was happening. They managed to knock the knife out of Dallas' hands and onto the floor where Pony picked it up and hid it. Dallas snarled like an angry dog as he tried escaping them to get the knife, but he was trapped by Darry who held him tightly.
Steve helped Soda up who winced and gripped his arm in pain. Blood ran down and dripped onto the floor.
"Shit! Soda you're arm!" Steve exclaimed.
"I'm fine, I'm fine." Soda reassured, "It's just a cut, nothing serious."
"What the hell were you doing?" Two asked Dallas.
"Let me out!" Dallas demanded, avoiding the question. Darry only held him tighter.
"Tell us what happened!" Steve yelled at Dallas, "Were you gonna kill Soda?!"
"H-He tried to kill himself with the knife." Johnny squeaked, biting his fingernails.
"I stopped him before he did." Soda added.
By now, Dallas was running out of strength and stopped moving. He was panting heavily and the his grip on Darry's arm that wrapped around him loosened. Darry finally let him go and Dally hung his head low.
"What the hell were you thinking, boy?!" Darry snapped at Dallas.
"I can't take it anymore!" Dallas yelled back, "I can't take this torture anymore!"
"What torture?" Steve asked.
"How everything going on is all my fault!" Dallas shouted, his voice breaking.
"You mean about the stuff in the elementary?"Soda brought up nervously.
"And not just that, but the church, before the rumble-everything! Y/N is the only thing that keeps me going in life and I made her suffer because of my actions! I thought I could fix everything if I could just not exist anymore, I wanted to be taken out of the picture so that she would be better off without me! But that caused her to get fucking shot in front of me and now she's gonna die!"
Everyone listened in shock with wide eyes.
"Wait, Dal." Pony stepped back, "Does that mean...that night you robbed the grocery store. It wasn't an ordinary robbery. Y-You lead the cops, and that gun you were holding. You said a few days ago that it wasn't loaded...was it a planned suicide?"
Everyone slightly gasped, watching Dallas as he nodded his head. Johnny's hair fell over his face, covering his eyes. But his quivering, pouting lips were crystal clear to Dally. He felt guilty, but he couldn't control his anger, grief, and sanity anymore.
"You've seen thing's, horrible things no person should ever see in their life." Darry said with worry, "You've gotten yourself in situations no kid your age should be in. And now two attempted suicides?! Dal, I can't believe it, you're only seventeen, a kid!"
Darry put his hands on Dally's shoulders.
"You think I care about that shit?" Dally said lowly as he flinched out of Darry's grip, "Do I think I care about any of you too?"
Dally was going delirious and he couldn't make himself stop.
"Now that's too far-," Soda stepped in.
"Shut up! Everyone one of you!" Dally lashed out, "You don't have any say in this, it was only me and Y/N, no, just me! So it's best if I never existed in this world, yes, everything would be fine without me!"
Dallas started laughing hysterically, scaring everyone.
"But no I had to be born anyway!" He cackled more, "I can't change the past now, so why not change my future! Give me the fucking knife, Pony!"
Pony stumbled back from Dal who was walking towards him. He then quickly shook his head.
"Dal stop!" Soda yelled.
"Nope! You guys know it, when my mind is set, it's set!" Dallas laughed again but more evilly now, "And I'm set on killing my self! Screw waiting for Y/N, she'll be dead any minute so there's no point in trying anymore. Haha! I won't ever see her again! But if she just so happens to magically come to life, she's better off without me! I bet she is disappointed in me for all I've done, good! She should feel that way because I'm a fuck up! Yes, I deserve all her hate. I'll find a way to kill myself and if any of you try to stop me, I'll stab you like I did to Soda's arm! Nothing can stop me no-!"
A sharp smack echoed from the block as Johnny's hand swiftly hit Dally's cheek. A gasp escaped deep from inside everyone like a ghost. The atmosphere abruptly changed to complete silence and surprise, you could hear a clock fainting ticking in the room.
Dallas was in the most shock of innocent Johnny, the boy who would never hurt a fly, smacked Dallas Winston.
"You little shit!" Dallas yelled, picking up Johnny off the floor by his shirt. His crutches fell to the ground with a loud smack.
Johnny didn't even flinch. He stared at Dallas with blue fire in his eyes without even blinking. Dallas' eyes widened and his face relaxed. He put Johnny down. He was intimidated by his confidence and strength. Johnny stood on one leg, but he stood strong.
"Don't say that, Dal." Johnny finally said quietly yet lowly in anger. His eyes started to water a bit but he hid it well, "I-I'm tired of just standing there when something bad is happening. I know I'm a coward, and I hate it. But seeing you fall apart just now, I had to do something. The way you moved and talked, that wasn't Dallas, or at least the Dallas I was friends with. Y/N loves you with all her heart, I've seen it many times. And y-you saying that she's disappointed in you a-and that she's better off without you ain't true at all. Yes, you bullied her in the past, but that doesn't matter anymore. She loves you no matter what. She would never stop looking for you when you were lost and she jumped in front of you and got shot! She took so many risks for you, Dal! If you still can't see that then open your eyes! She could die today and it would be all for nothing because of what you believe!"
Dallas remained in utter shock but listened intently in silence. Johnny had his fists clenched so tightly that his veins showed. His eyes still burned through Dal's soul. Johnny took a sharp inhale and continued.
"And you can't keep blaming yourself!" Johnny yelled, his voice breaking, "If you keep doing that it's only gonna get worse! Everyone has problems they deal with, I-I do too, I even talked about killing myself to end it all. But now I know that ain't the answer. You just gotta accept yourself Dal and move forward, I know it sounds cheesy, but it works."
Dallas felt weak and fell onto his knees. He glanced away, feeling tears well in his eyes after hearing Johnny's words.
"But I fucking can't, it's all over for me." Dallas said almost in a whisper, trying to swallow the lump in his throat.
"Yes ya can!" Johnny backed him up, his voice cracking even more, "It's not over, you still have time. Y/N's gonna wake up, you're gonna be together again, I know it."
Hearing her name again and Johnny's motivation towards him made Dallas sob. No one had ever said anything like that to him.
He cried into his hands as everyone watched quietly, touched by the moment.
Tears started raining down onto the floor above Dally. He looked up and noticed Johnny crying as well.
"And you're not alone Dally!" Johnny sobbed, "You have us! All of us! Your family!"
Dallas had forgotten that they were there all along when they were in plain sight.
Darry reached his hand out to Dal and gave a smile. Everyone stood by him, smiling through their tears. After a minute, Dallas smiled back and took his hand. Darry helped him off the ground and embraced him.
One by one, he hugged everyone and Johnny was saved for last.
Johnny cried some more into Dally's chest.
"Sorry I hit you." Johnny mumbled.
"No, don't be sorry. I deserved that." Dallas shook his head.
"And please Dal," Johnny pleaded as he looked up at Dallas, "Please don't ever say those things again, and don't kill yourself, please."
"I promise, I won't. I really mean it. Sorry Johnnycake. Now don't go spreading this news around or else everyone will call me a softie and my reputation will be destroyed."
"It's good to have you back." Johnny chuckled.
"Hm, me too." Dallas smiled a bit.
Just like that, Dallas was knocked out of his insanity. But he still had to take more steps to fully recover.
