"Wake up kid," Tiberius's voice snapped Wendy out of her thoughts. The month old red tailed hawk had been on the brink of falling asleep. Shaking her head to rid herself of sleepiness, she blinked her yellow eyes. The older hawk had returned and he was carrying two dead gray squirrels. One for each of them. Dropping one in front of her, he murmured, "Enjoy."
"Thank you," Wendy squeaked softly. Bowing his head slightly, Tiberius laid down. Setting his squirrel down in front of him, he began eating. Her stomach growling, Wendy didn't need an engraved invitation as she began eating her squirrel. The two hawks happily enjoyed their breakfast while the storm grew bigger and bigger outside.
Then lightning began to flash and the thunder roared.
Shrieking in terror at the first lightning strike, Wendy abandoned her squirrel and ran over to Tiberius. She hid under his wing. The youngster was reduced to a state of fear. She trembled and whimpered and cried and screeched. Watching her in silence, Tiberius sighed softly. The poor thing was absolutely terrified. And he didn't know what to do. He wasn't an expert at raising kids. Sure, he sometimes saw Norman as his son or a little brother but this was different. Wendy was an actual child.
"Wendy?" Tiberius spoke softly. He lifted his wing a little so he could see the young hawk. Tears were streaming down her face. Glancing up at him with sadness glistening in her yellow eyes, Wendy shrieked again when she heard more thunder. She promptly went back to burying her face into Tiberius's feathers. Sighing heavily, Tiberius turned his head away and pondered quietly. What was he gonna do? Wendy was clearly upset. Then an idea crossed his mind. Maybe... maybe that might do the trick. It was worth a shot.
Closing his light brown eyes, Tiberius opened his mouth and started to sing.
