"Thank you for landing," Wendy squeaked, hugging the trunk of the red maple tree she and the older hawk had landed in for dear life. Trembling a little, she gazed up at the blue skies high above their heads. She breathed a quiet sigh of relief, feeling safe in the tree. Closing her yellow eyes briefly, the young hawk silently thanked the loud noise that had gone off.
Just then, another one went off. It was followed by whimpering. Confused, Wendy opened her yellow eyes and looked over her right shoulder to find the older red tail was behind the whimpering. His light brown eyes were wide open in fear and his talons were digging deep into the branch they were on. By the looks of things, he was in a terrible state of panic. Worried, Wendy dared to step closer as she spoke softly, "It's okay, there's no need to be scared."
"I... I'm not scared..." Tiberius mumbled. Of course, he was flat out lying. Luckily, he hadn't been shot. Unfortunately, it appeared that Wendy also was unscathed. But truthfully, the old hawk felt like he had been shot through the heart. He couldn't think straight and he was struggling to regain his breath. Coming up with an idea, Wendy nuzzled him but was immediately pushed away.
"Everyone gets scared, nothing to be ashamed of," Wendy pointed out. Growling, Tiberius snapped, "I'm not scared! Say it one more time and I'll push ya out of the tree where the wild dogs will get ya!" That managed to shut Wendy up as she backed away from the old hawk out of fear.
