Chapter 49

A pair of pinecones sat upon a tree root. They would become the victims of a little hawk's first hunting lessons. A few feet away from the targets, Wendy trembled with excitement and fear. What would happen if she succeeded the lesson? What if she screwed up the lesson? Her head was spinning.

"Relax kid," Tiberius murmured. He was standing beside Wendy. Draping a wing over her shoulders, he went on, "This is just another walk in the park."

"But I've never been to a park," Wendy pointed out. Tiberius sighed. Geez the kid could sometimes be dumb. He opened his beak to explain that it was only an expression. But he decided against it. Gesturing to the pinecones, the old hawk instructed, "Now, this lesson should be handy for you since you can't fly yet. It can also work for the situation where you are unable to fly due to an injury." Turning to Wendy, he concluded, "Long story short, you're going to learn how to hunt like a cat kid."

"But how?" Wendy asked. Patting her on the head, Tiberius responded, "Watch and learn kid." Crouching down, he began crawling towards the pinecones. Despite his large size, he was able to keep himself low to the ground. Plus, the grass was pretty high. The old hawk simply vanished into the grass.

Perched on a rock, Wendy watched Tiberius as he stalked the two helpless pinecones. He was a natural at this. Halting in his tracks, the old hawk didn't move for a second or two. Then he suddenly pounced. His sharp talons struck first, grasping the pinecone on the right. Demonstration complete, he hopped up onto a stump with his pinecone. "Alright Wendy," the red tail declared, "Your turn."

Gulping nervously, Wendy began.
