"I'm cold..." Wendy whimpered quietly, trembling all over. She may have been covered in soft fluffy down but that didn't mean she was warm. The hard rain and wind were not helping one bit. Leading the way through the forest, Tiberius muttered, "Get over it." Hopping up onto the tree root of a maple, he spied a small burrow at the base of a nearby oak. Making his way towards the shelter, he called over his shoulder, "Come on! Before the storm gets worse!"
Struggling to walk due to the ferocious wind, Wendy shivered. She was both freezing and deathly afraid. A few minutes earlier, she thought she saw some lightning flash across the sky. Trembling, she went inside the small burrow that the older hawk had found underneath an oak tree. Both shook themselves dry before laying down on the dirt floor. Wendy retreated towards the back while her companion rested by the entrance. Not saying a word to each other, the pair tried to get some sleep.
The storm refused to let them rest.
Her yellow eyes snapping open at the roar of thunder, Wendy squeaked in terror. Without even thinking, she rushed over to the older red tailed hawk. Before he could react, the frightened youngster hid underneath his wing. Squeezing her eyes tightly shut, Wendy shook with fear and let out tiny squeaks.
"Do ya mind fuzzball?!" Tiberius snarled, his feathers bristling in agitation. His light brown eyes flashed red as he glowered at the young hawk hiding under his left wing, growling all the while. Wendy didn't seem to notice or care. If anything, she pressed herself even closer to him, her face practically buried in his feathers. The old hawk could even feel her tears running down her cheeks and falling onto him. In other words, the young hawk was absolutely terrified.
And she wasn't going to move anytime soon.
Sighing heavily, Tiberius glanced down at Wendy. She was still squeaking and crying. But now her eyes were open and she was looking up at him. All there was in those bright yellow eyes was fear. Absolute fear. Huffing, the old red tailed hawk reluctantly curled himself around the youngster. When she looked up at him again with confusion written on her face, he growled quietly, "Go to sleep." Not even caring if she listened to him or not, he rested his head on the ground and fell asleep.
Actually surprised that the older hawk had allowed her to stay, Wendy watched as he slept. Deciding to listen to him, she pressed herself against him. Still shaking while the storm raged on outside their small shelter, the month old hawk listened quietly to the beating heart of her companion instead. Finding it to be quite soothing, Wendy eventually closed her yellow eyes and fell asleep beside the older red tail. The pair slept while the forest faced the troublesome storm.
