Several hours had passed. The sun hung low in the sky, stretching the shadows of anything and everything in sight in the quiet Virginian forest. This included the shadows of two hawks walking along in the woods, one young and one old. Neither said a word to each other as they traveled north towards New York City. Towards home.
Her feet hurting as she walked, Wendy glanced up at Tiberius. The old hawk hadn't spoken a single word to her ever since that morning. She could only wonder what he was thinking about. With her being behind him, she couldn't see his face at all. Sighing, the little hawk looked down at the ground beneath her feet. She just wanted someone to talk to, the silence was becoming unbearable. The youngster also wanted to rest. She was becoming tired.
Coming across a large log, Tiberius didn't give it a second thought as he hopped up on top of it. He was about to jump down to the other side when he heard a small thud behind him. Huffing, he glanced over his shoulder to find Wendy trying to get up on the log. However, it was too big for and it was obvious that she was exhausted. After three or four more attempts, she flopped down on the ground. It was clear she wasn't gonna get over the log. Sighing heavily, Tiberius turned around and lowered his head.
Laying on the grass panting, Wendy let out a tiny squeak of alarm when she felt Tiberius grasp her neck. She was beginning to think that this was the end of her life. However, the young hawk had nothing to worry about as the older red tail held onto her firmly as he jumped down from the log. But the surprise wasn't over as he continued to carry her like a mother cat might carry a kitten. She didn't say a word about it though as she just hung from his mouth. The pair didn't stop walking until Tiberius found some bushes for them to sleep underneath. By then, the sun was below the horizon.
Placing Wendy down, Tiberius curled up away from her where he could see the night sky and the stars. Yawning, he was about to fall asleep when he felt something press up against him. Glancing down to his left, he saw it was only Wendy. It was too late though because her eyes were closed and she was fast asleep, her snores sounding like little whistles. Sighing heavily, the old red tailed hawk let her stay as he curled up around her. A second later, he was sleeping beside the youngster.
The two red tailed hawks slept while the crickets chirped, completely unaware of the danger lurking nearby.
