"Grab the vine!" Wendy cried, peering over the edge of the ravine. Not even caring that he was being ordered around by the annoying little fuzzball that had been following him around constantly, Tiberius bit down on the vine by his head. Seeing that the old hawk had a hold on the plant, Wendy grabbed one section of the vine and pulled with all her might towards a nearby stump, all the while pulling the older hawk up so he wasn't hanging upside down. Looping the vine around the stump so it would be secure, she grabbed another vine and wrapped it around herself. All set, she went back to the edge.
Gripping the vine as hard as he could without snapping it in half, Tiberius glanced up to find Wendy slowly climbing her way down the slippery rock wall of the ravine. She passed him and continued down his foot. The old hawk would've growled at her but he feared that he might lose his grip on the vine if he did. He could only wait. Looking up again, he noticed that the younger hawk's vine was beginning to break.
Reaching the old hawk's stuck foot, Wendy dug her talons deep into the rock wall. Moving very carefully, she lifted her left foot and started to claw at the crevice holding the red tail. It was hard and the sharp edges of the rock cut up her feet a little. But Wendy worked on until at last she made the hole big enough for her companion to move. She could tell that the old hawk knew he was free as he got his foot out of the hole the moment she had broken it open. Sighing with relief, Wendy smiled to herself. At that same time, there was a loud snap above her head. A moment later, she felt herself falling towards the muddy river at the bottom of the ravine.
Fearing the worst, Wendy squeezed her yellow eyes shut. However, it felt like her fall was cut off short. Trembling all over, she slowly opened one eye and then the other. To her surprise, she was hovering in the air, her wings tucked against her sides. She stared at the river below her fearfully. Shaking like a little leaf, she looked over her shoulder to see that the older hawk had grabbed the broken vine that she was tied to. By the time both hawks made it safely to the top of the ravine, Wendy realized something.
The old red tailed hawk had just saved her life after she had saved his own.
