Y/N AVOIDED THE NEWS. She grew tired of seeing the same thing over and over again; some infamous villain destroying property before a hero showed up and thrashed them around. It wasn't until she got her new quirk that she became so interested in the news, which is what led to now.
Ever since Dynamight had met an unfortunate end, the media had been on the hunt for his soulmate. She was his soulmate. The cold morning that her hands were extra sweaty and proceeded to sear her bedsheets proved it. Y/n pursed her lips, watching a crowd of reporters rush by to catch sight of another female faking Bakugo's quirk.
I can't believe they abuse him even in death. Her eyes were steely as she gritted her teeth. Y/n knew that the realization of her soulmate was something that she should speak out about, but she preferred her independent life. Y/n preferred to be a simple office worker that commuted by train; one that relied on being saved than doing the saving.
Call it selfish, but that was her.
Y/n squeezed another pump of hand sanitizer onto her hand, hating the burning sugar smell that coated it as she scrunched her nose. It wasn't an unpleasant scent; it was just overpowering. Even on the train, she couldn't seem to escape the haunting news about the death of one of the greatest heroes.
And when she finally got to work, nothing changed. Fine, you win, universe. She caved in, taking in a breath as she turned to join her co-worker's conversation. "Do you know where his grave is?" The lady across from her pursed her lips shut, refusing to answer her question while the male beside her smiled painfully at her.
"There was. . . he can't. . . "
He didn't need to finish his sentence.
Y/n understood.
A part of her heart hurt as her eyes pooled over with tears, her hand immediately reaching for her handbag as she blurted a lame excuse to her boss. She couldn't take it; she didn't have the energy for it. She didn't even know him, but here she was pathetically sobbing over his death. Y/n rushed to one of the park benches, setting her purse down.
Her shoulders shook harshly as she sobbed, suddenly startled at the feeling of a warm hand on her shoulder. "Ma'am, are you okay?" Y/n looked over at him, looking to see Red Riot. A mask was pulled over his mouth, but she could already picture his sharp teeth; he was one of the heroes flashed all over the news now.
For being the dead pro-hero's best friend. The media was disgusting.
Y/n didn't say anything, her words stuck in her throat. He looked at her with hesitant eyes before sighing and slowly moving to sit beside her. After a few more minutes of crying her eyes out, Y/n wiped her cheeks again. "You're Red Riot, right?" He nodded slowly at her question, his mouth shut under his mask as he gazed at her.
"I think. . . no. . . I'm Bakugo's soulmate."
He looked at her, brows furrowing as his eyes grew steely. "Is this supposed to be some kind of joke?" Kirishima didn't move, however, suddenly throwing his arm out as he glared at her. Y/n could understand why he was so defensive; there were so many false claims going around. It was cruel.
"Explode me," He said nonchalantly.
"What?" She looked at him, startled.
"Go on, explode me."
Y/n slowly reached her hand out, pressing her hand against his arm before a small pop sounded. Kirishima barely winced, the skin on his arm hardening in time as he pulled it back and looked over at the skin. "You're. . . you're his soulmate." Kirishima said in disbelief, staring at the woman clad in office attire.
"I'm Kirishima Eijiro,"
She smiled with teary eyes, "L/n Y/n. Do you think you can tell me about Bakugo?"
The redhead nodded and immediately pulled out his phone, moving his mask down to flash a grin at the lady as he swiped through his photos. There were so many: some of them had Bakugo annoyedly looking at the camera, some of them were of him running out of the shot while very few had him grinning with his other friends around him.
"Y'know, the day that Bakugo. . . passed," He swallowed as her hand slowly moved into his, gently squeezing it in a comforting manner before he continued. "Um, he insisted protecting this one train line. He said it was a gut feeling and once Bakugo's set on something, you can't exactly distract him." He smiled painfully.
Y/n understood the feeling, a small giggle leaving her lips. She was stubborn and determined too. "He ended up being right. This villain appeared out of the ground and when Bakugo was about to get up, the train just. . . " He trailed off, a lost look in his eyes as he stared down at the ground, tears dropping from his eyes to the ground.
Y/n squeezed his hand again, giving him a sad smile. "The train he was so adamant on protecting was the Sapporo station." The girl froze all of a sudden, sitting stiffly as she stared at him with wide eyes. "I was supposed to go there to visit family but the villain fight postponed my trip." Kirishima grew startled at that too, slowly tilting his head up to flash her a grin.
"I guess, even before death, you two were set in stone then, huh?" He smiled in a melancholic manner.
Y/n nodded, sucking in a breath before letting out a bitter sigh. "Yeah. . . " Maybe if he had been alive or if they had met earlier, they could be attached to each other. He wouldn't have had to die and she could've finally found comfort in someone other than her blood relatives, having a drive in something else other than her work.
"Bakugo would've been happy with you," Kirishima said quietly, head tilted down.
"You think?" Y/n glanced at him.
This time, his hand squeezed hers. "Yeah."
