Outlines of new eyes and visions of you
Girl, I think I need a minute
To figure out what is, what isn't
These choices and voices, they're all in my head
Sometimes, you make me feel crazy
Sometimes, I swear I think you hate me like, yeah
I need a walk, I need a walk
I need to get out of here
'Cause I need to know

"SHOTO, CAN I KITH YOU?"

Y/n smiled, her chubby cheeks showing off under the rays of the sun. Her best friend swung back and forth, his hands firmly wrapped around the chains of the swingset. He looked up, curious. Tilting his head innocently, Todoroki didn't get it. "What's that?" Y/n seemed to get even giddier under the pretense that he didn't know what she was talking about.

Striding up to him with no hesitation, she planted her lips against his childishly. He grew a bit flustered but still didn't seem to understand the meaning, only knowing that it felt nice. "That, silly!" She said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world, the small grin on her lips never leaving her face.

They had only known each other for two weeks, but why did he feel so close to her? Maybe it was because he hadn't had many kids around his age to label as a 'friend'; his father didn't allow him, but Rei was adamant about him being able to mingle with other kids at the playground. And of course, on the first day at the playground, he ended up playing hero.

According to Y/n, he was her knight in shining armor, whatever that meant. All he did was catch her when she fell from the monkey bars, did it really mean that much? "You're my soulmate," She announced boldly, pointing her finger at him. She didn't state it as an opinion or some farfetched wish. To her, it was a fact.

It was written in the stars and already tattooed across her heart that the heterochromatic-eyed boy in front of her was meant for her and no one else. Shoto still didn't get it, but if it meant that she would stay by his side and be his friend, then he would be as happy about it as she was. He shyly smiled, nodding in agreement.

"Okay."

Who are you?
'Cause you're not the girl I fell in love with, baby
Who are you?
'Cause something has changed, you're not the same, I hate it
Oh, I'm sick of waiting for love, love
Oh, I know that you're not the one, one

His breath hitched and he froze, eyes settling on the girl that was introduced to the class. On the second day, 1-A was introduced to a new student. Bandages wrapped around her arms, reaching her elbows, and her lips were pursed, brows furrowed in a thoughtful manner. It was clear that she wasn't going to bother to introduce herself.

Aizawa did the honors instead and she quickly bowed before striding to her seat. Seeming like a distant memory, the girl now seated to his left seemed so familiar yet so much like a stranger. There wasn't that smile on her lips and she didn't seem to bask in the same extroverted nature she used to.

Her fingers were curled inward, arms pulled towards herself as she set her head down on her desk. Unmotivated, reserved, and observant. He noted that when her eyes flicked towards his. There wasn't the faintest change in her expression and she merely stared, gazing at him until he ended up looking away from himself.

How could someone feel so connected to him yet seem so disconnected from her own reality?

He had spent so many years of his life believing that the girl at the playground hadn't existed in the first place. She had shortly disappeared after claiming that he was her soulmate and if soulmates were such a thing, why had she never found her way back to him? Shoto glanced again at her and this time, he noticed the dead look in her eyes.

It wasn't that she never found her way back to him; she never bothered to look.

Feelin' hypnotized by the words that you said
Don't lie to me, just get in my head
When the morning comes you're still in my bed
But it's so, so cold
Who are you?
'Cause you're not the girl I fell in love with

"Todoroki and L/n,"

Of course, it was Shoto's luck to be paired with the girl he had been attempting to avoid this entire time. By now, he had accepted that she wasn't just a figment of his imagination; he had heard her name too many times during roll call to forget her again at this point. They stood across from each other as their other classmates went off to train.

Most of them had a friendly grin on their faces, talking trash to one another as they made their way to an open area to spar. However, all Todoroki could feel was the cold. Her gaze was cold, her stance was rigid, everything about her seemed so. . . distant. He shot his ice at her first, watching as she lifted a leg.

Her move was calculative as a spray of crystals appeared from the same direction that she had kicked, blocking his ice swiftly. Shoto looked at her with wide eyes, barely able to dodge when she rushed towards him instead. She swung her foot at him and he quickly caught it, letting out a breath as he gazed at her silently.

Shoto hoped that maybe, just momentarily, she would stop. She would break from this facade and go back to the happy-go-lucky person he had known her to be. The one connection he had made as a child was faltering; that's what he thought, anyway. Unbeknownst to him, things were far worse than he figured.

The connection wasn't faltering; it was already dead.

Who are you?
'Cause you're not the girl I fell in love with, baby
Who are you? (Who are you?)
'Cause something has changed, you're not the same, I hate it

"Do you remember me?"

She stopped in her steps, turning to look over her shoulder. Todoroki swallowed harshly as her eyes settled on him again, pupils narrowed. He didn't know what answer he expected or if he'd get an answer at all. "Remember, you called me your soulmate," He spoke bluntly. It wasn't an opinion or some kind of emotional memory.

It was a fact.

Y/n's lips were still pursed but he could see her think over his statement, her mouth slowly parting as she spoke. "I do remember you, Todoroki Shoto. I don't remember you calling me your soulmate." For some reason, that crushed him. His heart hammered in his chest and he swallowed again. Why does it hurt so bad?

"We're soulmates; you said that."

"I don't remember saying such a thing."

"Well, you did."

"Do you even know anything about me?"

He tensed at that question, slowly rolling up his sleeves anxiously before he elaborated. "You fight with your feet because of your quirk; you emit crystals, but you have more control with it in your legs than you do your arms. That's why you're covered with bandages." Her lips set in a scowl.

"I said me, not my quirk."

"You didn't let me finish," Shoto's tone softened.

She blinked at him expectantly and he continued. "But you do it anyway just because you're determined. You do that all the time; you're reckless and adamant. You were exactly like that when I saved you from those monkey bars years ago when you called me your knight in shining armor."

He didn't know what he expected because suddenly, her fist was gripping the front of his shirt.

Oh, I'm sick of waiting for love, love
Oh, I know that you're not the one, one

She pulled him close, their noses barely brushing against one anothers. "I'm not the same girl you keep pining over. Get that in your head. You can talk about my power and the amount of determination I have whenever; run with that as your understanding of me, but it's false." He was stiff, frozen against her hold as she slowly let go.

Y/n took a step back, eyes still narrowed in a powerful glare.

"You can overestimate how much you know about me any day, but don't you dare consider me identical to the person you first met. Don't underestimate the power of my pain."

And as she walked away, Shoto saw little crystals appear from each of her footsteps. With each step, her figure grew farther and farther away from him, forcing him to swallow the harsh truth.

It's not that she never found her way back to him; she never bothered.
