Those two gasps belonged to the two girls who were now standing still, frozen. All eyes were on the newcomer, a male. Almost everyone was startled and confused by the stranger at the door and Chan was especially confused. He was the first to confront the man.

"And who might you be?" he asked breezily.

Before the mysterious person got to answer, Jieun thrusted the cake into Soonyoung's hands, running up to the stranger with Yunseo and hugging him.

"Jisoo!" they shrieked happily.

Joshua laughed at his sister's best friends, happy he was able to surprise them. But not everyone was as happy as Joshua, Yunseo and Jieun were. Soonyoung was feeling slightly disheartened at Jieun hugging another male, seeming so close with each other as well. And Chan was still waiting for an answer, although seeing Sooyun's two best friends being familiar with this person he didn't know put out the fire.

"Uh.. surprise?" he said, like it was a question.

"Wait, when did you get here?" Jieun asked, unwrapping her arms from Sooyun's brother, relieving Soonyoung.

"Literally this morning. I came here to surprise my little sis, so I arrived at 6."

Chan held back his sigh of relief. He berated himself for even thinking Sooyun wouldn't be faithful. Of course this person was Sooyun's relative. He was being too untrusting and he hated himself for that.

"That's awesome. We haven't seen you in like two years." This time it was Yunseo's turn to speak.

Joshua nodded his head. He had moved back to America six years ago, when he was 19 (20), wanting to seek an education somewhere outside of Korea. He picked the United States mainly because his mother and father grew up there but only moved to Korea when he was conceived. Joshua's most recent visit was from two years ago, which meant he had not seen them in person at all lately. Joshua wanted to come back in time for his sister's birthday, planning to visit Yunseo and Jieun some time later in the week. But thanks to the surprise everyone planned, Joshua got to see them earlier than expected.

"I'll only be here for a week, unfortunately," Joshua said, making an apologetic face.

"It's fineeee. It might be short but at least you won't miss Sooyun's birthday and mine." Jieun replied, smiling.

Joshua nodded. "Oh yeah. That's two days after Sooyun's." He turned to look at everyone else that was here.

"Oh, aren't you Yunseo's boyfriend?" he asked Minghao.
Minghao nodded. "Yeah. I remember you, I think."
Yunseo laughed. "I think," she said, mimicking Minghao's words.

"Looks like that's everyone I recognise." Joshua said, scanning the small crowd for other familiar faces. None.

The three remaining boys who hadn't introduced themselves looked at each other, unwillingly. Chan sighed, before starting off.

"Um... okay. I guess I'll introduce myself first. I'm kind of hoping you aren't one of those over-protective brothers or whatever-" he began.

"You don't need to worry. Why?"

"Good, because Sooyun and I are together." Chan finished, saying those last words quickly. Joshua raised his eyebrows in surprise, before looking at Chan with a teasing face.

"Oh? So my sister has her own boyfriend now huh? And that brat didn't think to tell me, tsk tsk." Joshua shook his head in disappointment. "Well, you two have fun together," he said the last part to Chan with a particular look, causing the latter's face to morph into one of horror. Chan grew pink from the absolute embarrassment.

"Well... I- uh."

"I was joking, I was joking!" Joshua hurriedly said, waving his hands. "But on a more serious note, I'm glad Sooyun finally has someone. And you better take care of her and never hurt her, otherwise I'll find you-" Joshua stated, pointing at Chan menacingly. Chan widened his eyes in surprise before nodding.

"Yessir!" he joked. Chan quickly realised he forgot to mention Soonyoung and Jun to Joshua, so he hurried to do so. "Right! This is Soonyoung-" he pointed at the male holding a box of cake. "-and this is Jun."

"It's a pleasure to meet you two."

No one had anything to say afterwards, so they all just stood there. It was slightly awkward for Joshua, who was basically new to half of the friend group. The silence disappeared as soon as a voice from the inside of the apartment reminded everyone of why they were here.

"Jisoo? Everything okay? Who's outside?" Sooyun called out. Jieun and Joshua made eye contact, smiling at each other like there was an inside joke.

"Come see for yourself," Joshua shouted back.

"Ugh, fine!"

"Everyone, quick! Get out your balloons and party poppers." Jieun commanded. There was a rustling of pockets and jackets as everyone hastily grabbed everything. Jieun took the party popper from Soonyoung's hand, along with the cake that was probably a sad little pile of melted cream by now.

btw they're calling him Jisoo because they wouldn't know his english name/it would be hard for them to switch to but i'm using his name 'joshua' as the main way of addressing him when i'm writing any other parts than the dialogue :)
