[Two Months Later]
It had been a very regular two months for Jieun, but she felt like a regular person could not relate, so she started calling her life irregular-ish. She still considered herself partly sane, which is exactly what an insane person would say. Haha...
But with all bad jokes aside, everything had been going smoothly for the individual. She of course had yet to confess to Soonyoung, but luckily, Sooyun did with Chan. Or so she heard. Sooyun had yet to actually address this in a conversation so Jieun was not entirely sure.
Jieun felt at peace with the SHINee music playing in the background, used to it. She had given up in trying to convince Soonyoung to shut up and somehow perfectly forgotten to buy him headphones. Maybe she would miraculously remember when his birthday came around, who knows? Meanwhile, Jieun was convinced she was now at least part Shawol now, able to recognise every song that comes on, which is quite an impressive feat.
She now sat, staring at her wall with nothing to do except listen to music that isn't even coming from her phone or laptop. She was bored, despite having her phone sitting right next to her and the television literally in front of her. Jieun was the epitome of everyone in 2020.
And just like any bored person does, Jieun decided to check the fridge for food.
And, to her shock and dismay, she found nothing. Emptiness was all there was.
Jieun felt the hunger settle down only when she found nothing in the fridge. It always seemed to happen at times like that. She didn't exactly find it very helpful. Thanks a lot, stomach.
So now Jieun was at her front door, opening it with a thin jacket on and stepping outside to go to the convenience store. And before anyone asks, she was only going to the convenience store to buy some instant ramen, kimchi and some drinks since it was getting dark and Jieun didn't feel like going out in the dark and grocery shopping at night.
So she escaped the comfort of her house and began walking out. After a relative two minutes, Jieun passed by a large lamp on the sidewalk, like the ones you find everywhere. Laying next to it was a grown man in dirty clothes, wrapped in a thin blanket with nothing else. He looked to be only slightly conscious, probably asleep. Jieun felt a twinge of sadness for this stranger and vowed to buy some food and a large bottle of water for the poor man.
After a relatively short walk of five minutes, Jieun picked her ramen and kimchi before making it into the drinks aisle. There she took the largest bottle of spring water she could find, as well as her favourite drink, a soda of some sort. She took two of those. In her eyes, one was never enough for her. Jieun walked into the aisle of foods she could give the homeless man, including a bit of fruit and some chips for him and began going to the counter.
Jieun was stopped short when she saw pocky. Her mouth watered at the sight of it and Jieun argued with herself over if she wanted to buy it or not. Eventually winning the debate and deciding to take a look at the pocky, Jieun's eyes scanned the flavours available and nodded her head in approval at the variety. After deciding which pack to get, she decided on all flavours. Jieun loved every single one she had on the shelf, so she couldn't resist.
Making no eye contact with the cashier, one by one, every item in her hands was transferred to the person behind the counter and scanned, the small beeps heard throughout the entire store. They bagged the food, telling Jieun the price in a tired and dead voice, accepting the cash and letting the girl on her way. She felt bad for anyone working in retail. It sounded draining dealing with rude customers every day. She couldn't imagine having to face being bullied on a daily basis by strangers who don't even know you. But surely there must be those customers that actually treat them right?
"Hey um, sorry to ask, but by any chance do you have a slip of paper and a pen?" Jieun asked the cashier politely. They wordlessly gave over the pen and paper. Writing a small note down, Jieun returned the pen and thanked the woman behind the counter.
Jieun left the convenience store and started walking back to her apartment, using the same route before, because, why wouldn't she?
It was now officially dark, air silent. The only sounds were the occasional noises of people taking a smoke outside and conversing with one another or the cars driving past. Jieun never realised how quiet the street she took was until that night.
It was as if it was foreshadowing something terrible to happen.
Jieun walked her first step closer.
And then her next, and next, and next...
Until, her last one.
👀 well that can't be good
