Jieun blew out the candles, making everyone cheer. A round of applause soon followed, making Jieun bow jokingly.

“Okay but what was your wish?” Sooyun asked nosily.

“I can’t tell you that. It won’t come true if I do.” Jieun winked.

“Oh please, you haven’t believed in that superstition since the start of high school,” Sooyun remarked.“I imagine your wish has something to do with Soonyoung, hm?” she continued on, making Jieun glare at her.  Sooyun laughed at her reaction, making Jieun frown even more.

“Anyway!” Jieun said loudly, gaining everyone’s attention. She looked around at the pairs of eyes looking back at hers. “Time for the cake!”

Jieun took the cake knife, holding it with care. With her free hand, she plucked the slightly melted candles off the cake, discarding them to the side. She then positioned the blade, lingering on top of the chocolaty glazed cake with the words ‘Happy Birthday Jieun’ decorated on top.

Jieun began to slicing into the cake, starting from to center all the way down to the edge of it, making the first incision. She cut again, taking the first slice and placing it on a plate before taking the first bite.

“Mmm, wait this is reallllyyy good!” she mumbled, savouring the sweet flavour.

“Phew, I was a bit nervous you wouldn’t like it.” Jun replied, looking relieved at Jieun's reaction.

Jieun smiled at him before cutting the rest of the cake for everyone.

As the conversations began to start naturally again, Jieun stood by herself, staring at the trees, wandering around in her own mind. She occasionally took a bite from the cake, chewing slowly as thoughts ran through her head.
Somewhere from the back, she could hear the sound of Sooyun screaming as a moth flew near her. Chan piercing laughter was all that Jieun heard for the next twenty seconds (okay but like, chan’s laugh gives me ten extra years to my life, as well as everyone in seventeen 😌), making her smile a bit. Soonyoung walked over to the lone girl, accompanying her. He must have finished his plate of cake already since there was no sign of one in his hand.

“Hey…” he greeted. Jieun flinched at the sudden voice beside her, before realising it was Soonyoung and turning to greet him. In her mind she was scolding herself over how embarrassing it was she got scared by that.

“Hi, did you enjoy the party?” she asked.

Soonyoung nodded, replying, “Yeah, that cake was really nice. I heard Jun made it himself but I can’t be sure.”

“Ooh wow, really? That’s pretty cool.” Jieun responded and widened her eyes in surprise. “Didn’t expect him to be the baking type.”

There was a small silence as Jieun finished her cake slice. She excused herself to go place it back on the pile of used dishes on the table and shortly returned to Soonyoung.

“You know, earlier before, Minghao mentioned that there was a small path that led to this pond with these fishes or something. Wanna go check it out with me?” Soonyoung asked innocently. Jieun smiled softly and agreed.

The two began to walk to a small path in the clearing that led off into the trees. The dirt path led them to a small wooden bridge that hung over a small stream. The water flowed chaotically, rushing over small stones and pebbles, making the liquid run to the side. A tree rustled somewhere as the wings of a bird flew it to another location. At the end of the bridge, laid the dirt path once again. The pair walked slowly, enjoying the calls of nature and also each other’s presence.

The small path ended at a moderate sized pond after a refreshing walk. The water glistened, reflecting the moonlight that shone onto the surface. It was smooth, untouched, only rippling once a single leaf delicately landed. Circles of miniscule waves expanded out, lowering in size the farther they got from the source. Small fish swam slowly, rushing away in a panic as Jieun and Soonyoung made it to the destination intended. They stopped, observing the fishes in silence.

Soonyoung suddenly remembered the events of the day before, being the first to break the silence. As the curious person he was, he was desperate to know what Jieun had to say to him.

“So, Jieun... shouldn't there be something you need to tell me? I mean, now that we're all alone and all.” he recalled teasingly.

Jieun widened her eyes, beginning to feel sweaty, hands clammy and heart pounding nervously.

“Y-yeah. I guess I should finally tell you…” she began, hesitating in the middle of her sentence, the doubt finally hitting her. Soonyoung stared at her in anticipation, wondering what she was about to say and what she was thinking. Jieun gathered all her courage and looked up from the pond, staring deeply into Soonyoung’s eyes.

“I…”

Hah sike. You’ll have to read the next chapter to find out what happens.
