When I see Potter running out of the girls' bathroom in a panic, I freeze.
I'd told Maxon to go ahead to dinner without me, as I left a few books in my dorm and we were planning on studying in the library after eating. I was just on my way to the dungeons when Potter bolted out, and for some reason, I have a feeling it isn't because he accidentally walked into the wrong lavatory.
I watch with a curious frown as he fades away down the hall, and it's only when his figure turns the corner and disappears that I turn back to the door. It's swinging on its hinges, clearly broken. I'm about to shrug and just continue on my way when I see the little pool of water starting to seep out under the door.
And the red tint it has.
My feet move before my brain can command them to stay put. The smell of iron—blood—is suddenly so potent that I can't imagine how I missed it before. Pushing the door open, I step into the bathroom and gasp when I see tendrils of red unfurling in the rushing, flooding water on the tiles like flowers in bloom. They kiss against my ankles, soak through my shoes, and—
I stop dead in my tracks when I see a figure hunched over another.
I recognize him as Professor Snape, hearing him mutter song-like incantations under his breath while his hands move about the person's torso.
My stomach feels like it'll come right up out my nose at the smell, and my heart is about ready to burst out my chest. I take a step closer, face drawing with horror and my feet sloshing with water.
Snape doesn't turn, but he snarls, "Back so soon, Potter? Hope you've brought that book."
I ignore him. Or, rather, I don't hear him. I don't sense anything, not even the blood in the air or the roar of the water and cries of Myrtle.
All I see is the blood-stained blond hair, the pale, statuesque face covered in crimson, the slash marks all down his face, chest, arms, legs, spiraling around him. Blood spills from him in torrents, receding at a slow pace as Snape's muttering increases.
I fall to my knees with a tortured gasp, and this makes him finally look at me. I ignore him still, crawling in my hands and knees as all my energy betrays me, moving forward until I'm sitting in the bloody water. I blink quickly, vision blurring and drops of water falling onto my glasses.
