This will probably be confusing, so I'll explain as much as I can without spoilers.
When Roxas comes to life, him and Sora are the same person (i.e. Axel and Lea), but they eventually cultivate their own individual hearts inside Roxas' body, if that makes sense.
Vanitas is sort of just Ventus's dark thoughts, in the form of a voice in the back of his mind, and doesn't have an appearance besides his eye color. :)
Sora is more or less put in the "damsel in distress" role, but itll make sense later on.
YES, THERE IS A REASON FOR VENTUS NOT AGING, IT JUST DOESN'T APPEAR UNTIL LATER-
